"As leaders we should ask ourselves daily: 'What have I said today to reinforce the message that anyone’s voice can make a difference and that I want to hear it?'" - writes Dr Jayne Chidgey-Clark in this month's Board Agenda® "It is essential that boards reflect on what their workers are telling them about “what it is like around here”. That’s not merely taking the headline numbers from staff surveys, but digging deep into the detail. Use all the data and engagement opportunities you can to listen to the silence. ▶ Who are you not hearing from? ▶ Why are you not hearing from them? ▶ Are they fearful, disenfranchised, disillusioned? ▶ What more can you be doing?" #NED #Boards #ListenUp #Governance

I had the great pleasure to attend this morning's IPAA ACT Future Leaders 'Future-ready leadership summit' held at the National Museum of Australia looking out to the gentle rippling waters of Lake Burley Griffin. It was fascinating to hear from Tristan Hoffmeister, Director of Access and Learning, at the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra about his leadership experiences at several of Canberra's cultural institutions, including their response to the bushfire smoke of 2019 and 2020, the 2020 hailstorm and the global COVID-19 pandemic. Tristan was followed by a powerful panel discussion led by Anthony Pronin involving the Australian Digital Health Agency's Amanda Cattermole PSM, Chris Mercer from the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia and Xiaoyan Lu from the Australian National Audit Office. Amanda, Chris and Xiaoyan each shared examples of very different workplace challenges that fully tested their leadership, courage and personal integrity. The ways they responded to and managed these challenges were inspiring. And the third act in a very well-designed summit program was a masterclass by Pamela Kinnear on 'Unlocking your leadership potential: Frank and fearless at all levels'. Pamela had so much to cover in such a short time but delivered it with humour and aplomb. I was really taken by the way she framed 'fearless' as not being 'brave' per se, but rather being 'without fear'. You can get a sense of her framing of this issue in her recent piece in The Mandarin. Pamela, like myself, loves a good book. Two standout recommendations she gave were 'Fierce Conversations' by Susan Scott and 'Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High' by Kerry Patterson and others. They just got added to my reading list. Two more books Pamela referenced were by Ira Chaleff: 'The Courageous Follower' and 'Intelligent Disobedience'. I will be keeping an eye out for these too. Well done to Rachel King from the IPAA ACT Future Leaders Committee who kept the summit to time and to the friendly staff of IPAA ACT who helped with its delivery. #frankandfearless #advice #leadership #courage #capability #curiosity #difficultconversations #governance #aiandcreativity #powerdynamics
Should we be fearless or simply ‘fear less’ in 2024?
