I attended the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting of the New Champions last week and addressed a number of sessions on how we scale up and accelerate private sector action to stop nature loss and secure a nature positive world by 2030. Some insights from the discussions: 📈 We need to tackle the nature and climate crises as inter-related issues, and to address the shared root causes: the unintended consequences of current approaches to economic activity and growth. This means bringing climate and nature into discussions on growth, productivity and innovation, not treating them as parallel tracks. 💡 We need innovation at scale to develop clean, green solutions. But innovation alone is not enough. If we are going to rapidly transition/phase out damaging activities, we need to not only focus on the 'carrots' of win-wins and opportunities, we also need hard discussions about 'sticks' and what we will stop doing. 💵 We need market-based solutions, but markets aren't currently driving enough progress - in fact they all too often punish companies that disrupt short term commerciality. We need policy action and governance to tilt markets so they value/reward business action to build long term value and resilience, to ensure that money moves as a result of assessments and disclosures. ⌛ At a time in which we are seeing devastating losses of human life caused by extreme heatwaves, there is still too little sense of urgency. We are not yet collectively rolling up our sleeves to get serious about the change that is needed. 👉 We need leadership, and that starts with all of us. As one speaker at the forum said, we are focusing all of our time perfecting the vision of the metaphorical car we want to build in future, and paying insufficient attention to the driver who has to step on the pedal. Many thanks to World Economic Forum (WEF) for hosting me and CISL colleague, Jie Zhou, and to my fellow attendees for the rich conversations, including Naoko Ishi, Director, Center for Global Commons, University of Tokyo; Jingdong Hua, Vice-Chair, International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB); Gim Neo , Managing Director of the Centre for Nature and Climate, WEF; Magdalena Skipper, World Economic Forum; André Hoffmann, Author, The New Nature of Business. #AMNC24 #WEF

On March 6-7th, 2024 I will participate to the GoNaturePositive! (#GoNP) Kick-off Event in Dublin, IE, as a member of the Impact Board, looking particularly at the strategic, governance and ethical issues. In line with the European Green Deal priorities, in particular the EU biodiversity strategy for 2030 and the revised climate targets, GoNP - a collaborative Research and Innovation Action supported by the European Commission in the context of the #horizoneurope programme - will contribute to the development of policies and market conditions to scale up and accelerate the implementation of nature positive economic activities with particular focus on Nature-based Solutions (#NBS). It will promote mainstreaming of #biodiversity, #ecosystemservices and natural capital valuation in the society and economy. I strongly recommend to my network members to register to this event, which will debate clarity of concepts around nature positive economy (e.g., #circulareconomy, #sustainablebioeconomy), spur new knowledge and expertise of relevant stakeholders in both public and private sectors (incl. economic and financial decision-makers), promote EU global leadership in nature based enterprises, design new enabling policy, regulations, support, tools, and capacity building measures towards better integration of innovative nature-based entrepreneurship and nature-based solutions in the current economic and financial system, and of course support the implementation of the EU biodiversity strategy for 2030 and the related European Green Deal priorities. https://lnkd.in/eYPZNjSm

Last week, we had our Climate-KIC All Staff gathering in Berlin, it's always a highlight of my year. I'm reminded time and time again of the caliber, expertise and drive that my colleagues have, and how ambitious we are to make real change. My personal takeaways - EU priorities are changing, we all need to do our part to ensure climate change continues to be a top priority for the decades to come. I strongly recommend you read this: https://lnkd.in/eu4u9hRH and if you can, vote in the upcoming EU elections! - Learning is a priority for Climate-KIC: They say "innovation and learning are two sides of the same coin". We are improving our internal reflection, but we can do more to improve cross-cluster exchange, knowledge management and trust. Building on the opportunity I co-led a workshop on how to build a culture of trust in remote/distributed organizations - emphasizing that trustworthiness is built from reliability, honesty and capability. Shout out to Brian Lally Evgenija Damcevska Lea Hanzelová for their support! - EIT Climate KIC's role in championing and driving the "Systemic Climate Collaborative" is hugely ambitious and an attempt to turn competition into collaboration around common impact goals. We need to stop competing for funding and instead join forces with the many excellent partners in the field. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eVyZ_X9D - Climate-KIC's work is increasingly global, we operate across Sub-Saharan and West Africa, in Central and South America and we even have an office in Australia! - We have some incredibly talented leaders in the organisation. For me personally, I'd like to give a special shout out to Solla Zophoniasdottir Saskia Visser for their continual support and guidance! I've also witnessed a lot of leadership emerging from colleagues that step up and champion important initiatives internally. Big shout out to everyone that supported, designed, and organised this event!! Elena Trutnau Inna Chilik Karolina Iwa

We had a great workshop with like-minded scholars, talking about how we can incorporate systems thinking and systems theories into our research and projects. Hopefully more to come soon! #systems #systemsthinking
How to build shared understandings and visions for #systemic problems? There is a rich history of thinking in systems and a growing interest in systemic problems such as the #SDGs. Recent studies show that systems perspectives hold significant potential for understanding and studying core phenomena in organization and management research and address #SDGs in practice. Huge thanks to all for joining our first 'Barcelona Systems Research Day' yesterday to advance insights on how to use a #system perspective in teaching and in management research to better understand and study #grand sustainability challenges. Thanks Domenico Dentoni and Guillermo Casasnovas for providing insights into their latest research and Alice Mascena Barbosa for sharing her practical experiences at Innovation North. And special thanks to Alice Mascena Barbosa, Federica Massa Saluzzo, Davide Luzzini for hosting us at EADA Business School. Looking forward to continuing these conversations! Stay tuned for our next event 😊 Chiara Andreoli, Federica Massa Saluzzo, Davide Luzzini, Valentina De Marchi, Natalia Garrido-Skurkowicz, PhD, Guillermo Casasnovas, Ferran Curtó Desirée Knoppen Veronica Devenin Juliane Reinecke Marya Hill-Popper Besharov Markus A. CEO of Culture Intelligence - a stellar SaaS where companies can make their culture tangible and fit for purpose
Excited to be on stage in Reykjavik tomorrow with the World Future Studies Federation to talk about how values impact tomorrow’s democracies! In light of the recent global tragedies, we need more than ever to care, trust and unite. We need to see the purpose of democracies. The paradox is that the opposite seems to be the trend, resulting in more autocratic leaders coming into power. Together in the conference we will explore which values that will be more important to strengthen in democracies for the future. Any suggestions? Leif Edvinsson Hank Kune Yngvar Ugland Anders Hvide Karl Friðriksson
How can we inspire the rest of the world to renew democracy for the 21st century?

In 2023, the world faced extraordinary challenges that required a level of resolve and resourcefulness that could not have been achieved in isolation. Drawing from over seven decades of learnings, we partnered with local leaders, governments, civil society and the private sector to meet urgent needs and lay the groundwork for lasting, community-driven development. Our Impact Recap 2023 Annual Report highlights what we were able to accomplish together, across five continents and in nearly 30 countries.
