What other organization outside of the DoD has a supporting non-profit that offers next-to-no questions asked interest-free loans and grants? Active Duty friends and colleagues, consider this: Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society is almost entirely volunteer-run, with 90% of donations going directly to Sailors, Marines, and their families. It gave out 50 million just last year alone. Unfortunately though, annual donations continue to decline. Last year's fund drive only received $750,000 from Hampton Roads Area commands. We can turn this around though! With as little as $5 per month, per service member, NMCRS could collect well over 18 million during this year's campaign. Here's an evolving #climatejustice issue - who gets to or has the capacity to sound the alarm on a climate emergency?  I know the threats of climate change are real. I also feel that we do ourselves a disservice by waiting for an emergency to be a certified dumpster fire even as communities everywhere are feeling climate change impacts the world over. It's worth considering because if we respond to current circumstances everywhere with the same need for certified emergency statuses with long format studies or annual reporting, we'll be waiting forever. Government assets are often strategically places and maintained to reduce the likelihood of climate change impacts or general disruptions. They inherently may not be the first to be affected by changes in severe weather. So who is sounding the alarm first, and how seriously are we responding to them? 

This is how rising sea levels affect people and infrastructure that matter to average Americans. From the US Army Garrison at Rio-Namur Atoll, Marshall Islands on Sunday 20 Jan. No fatalities, but significant disruption at a military installation that works hard to keep us all safe. A 2018 DoD study that focused on Roi-Namur Island concluded that, “The impact of sea-level rise inundation combined with annual wave-driven flooding will begin to significantly negatively impact Roi-Namur when mean sea level is 0.4 meters higher than at present.[…] the annual wave-driven flooding will disrupt operations on Roi-Namur.”

This is why we work so hard in the Climate Resilience Program in the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Energy Resilience and Optimization to understand and prepare for changing climate, building resilience through both adaptation and mitigation. *SLR and unusually high surge/wave.

How long will it be until events like this at a DOD installation affect general community readiness?  Our coastal communities are used to “disaster preparedness,” but relentless impacts—sometimes stealth and incremental, sometimes massive and immediate—are the new normal. Climate change is the ultimate threat multiplier.

This is quite an scary example of how storm surge can be so destructive and dangerous. While this example came from a very low lying island in the Pacific it does demonstrate how sea level rise will make storm surge impacts even worse.
