To encourage grass roots engineering, DL M&E Building Services Ltd has sponsored Westhoughton High School 2024/25 Race to the Line rocket car project. 🚀 🏎 It involves the participation of the whole Year 7 cohort and aims to foster interest in STEM related subjects, which can drive interest towards future roles in mechanical and electrical engineering. It’s a fantastic challenge developed and supplied by Thelearning Partnership that involves students designing and racing model rocket cars, integrating physics, engineering and teamwork. The reason DL M&E Building Services Ltd is proud to sponsor Westhoughton High School Race to the Line project for 2024/25 is because the processes involved are very similar to the demands of the construction industry, where collaboration is at the heart of our operations. We trust this project in some way helps young people see the potential they have and how their skills, no matter how varied, can be applied in some way through engineering and project supporting roles. If you’re studying engineering… you should quit. How’s that for an engineering week post? This is why you should quit: - Engineering will offer you opportunities way past traditional engineering - Having that background will open so many doors for you - Engineering will teach you how to problem solve But I’ll be the first to admit that engineering is HARD. - I didn’t get to have a “college experience” - There was a moment every semester I’d pray to just get through that semester - I struggled with concepts that my classmates breezed through But one day I was at that podium getting my degree and from the other side of the struggle I can tell you… It’s worth it. Because it isn’t - just about the degree - Or the experience - Or the money - Or the opportunities It’s about finding a degree that is malleable to the dynamic qualities of a person! I’ve used my degrees to: - Take on consulting projects - Taught Building Information Modeling - Been on an advisory board - Be a drone pilot So tell me- what would you say to someone considering quitting engineering?

Next up for our Co-op Spotlights is Landon Hamaker! Landon is a Mechanical Engineering major and has spent the last 3 semesters on a Product Engineer Co-op at Marvin! He says his main job is "At Marvin, my team and I do research and development on existing products. We make design changes to enhance the performance of the Ultimate, Signature, and Scenic doors. Part of our day-to-day functions include testing units on a huge polycarbonate wall capable of simulating rain, wind, and pressure of a category 5 hurricane. Sometimes units will fail and we have to deconstruct them to perform root cause analysis to determine what went wrong. After that, we can engineer solutions to try to stop any issues in the future." He says he has learned the importance of the engineering design process and the scientific method, and properly utilizing them in real-world applications. When asked what the most important aspect of getting experience outside the classroom is, he said "One of the most important experiences my Co-op has shown me is how to communicate with people outside of the engineering field. We are constantly working with other groups to make changes and communicating engineering problems to non-engineers has always been a struggle for me. I'm really grateful to have all the wonderful people around me to progress my skills." Landon's advice to someone considering a Co-op is "There are numerous beneficial experiences you can gain during co-op that you can't obtain in a classroom setting. Being surrounded by experienced like-minded individuals helped me progress skills that will be crucial in my career. Not only are you able to apply your knowledge from classes to your co-op, but once you return to school, the things you learned at work will also apply for the rest of your schooling." As part of Engineers Week last week, KPC collaborated with St. Columba’s NS to bring the fascinating world of Engineering right to the students' doorstep! Engineers Week has been created to introduce primary and secondary school children to the diverse world of engineering, by providing practical resources for teachers, and on-demand virtual engineering shows. This year, KPC Engineer David McCurtin visited the students of St. Columba’s NS to lead an engaging session on the fundamentals of Engineering through the Egg Drop Challenge! For the more junior students in the class, David also led a spaghetti and marshmallow tower challenge 🍝 Here's how it worked: 🔧 The students dove into the practical side of engineering by designing and constructing their very first containers using basic craft materials. 📈 The containers were then put to the ultimate test as they were dropped from increasing heights, all in an attempt to protect the egg inside. 🏆 After each drop, students had the opportunity to refine and enhance their designs, learning valuable lessons in continuous improvement. The grand finale? The student whose egg survived the highest drop was crowned the ultimate Egg Drop Champion! 🎉 This challenge isn't just about fun—it's about learning essential concepts in Material, Mechanical, and continuous improvement engineering.
