The REAL Lesson from Today's CrowdStrike Outages I argue that while, yes, #CrowdStrike is partially at fault, the blame for today's outages may be a consequence of another phenomenon altogether... In the wake of today's global IT meltdown triggered by a faulty CrowdStrike update, the tech world is buzzing with analysis and finger-pointing. While it's easy to lay blame at the feet of the cybersecurity giant, the real lesson from this incident lies not in CrowdStrike's misstep, but in the systemic failure of IT best practices across countless organizations worldwide. The scale of the disruption was staggering. Thousands of flights were grounded, hospitals faced system outages, and government agencies struggled to maintain critical services-from the New York Stock Exchange to Berlin Airport. But this chaos could have been largely avoided. Let's be clear: software updates can and do go wrong. It's an inherent risk in IT. CrowdStrike isn't the first to face this issue, and they certainly won't be the last. We've seen similar incidents with other major players like McAfee in the past. The real question we should be asking is: why did a single update have the power to bring down so many critical systems simultaneously? The answer lies in a widespread neglect of one of the most fundamental principles of IT management: testing updates in a controlled environment before full deployment. It's IT 101, yet the events of today suggest that an alarming number of organizations, including those responsible for critical infrastructure, are skipping this crucial step. Consider the implications. Hospitals, airlines, and government agencies are entrusted with some of the most sensitive and critical operations in our society. The idea that they might be pushing updates directly to production environments without proper vetting is, frankly, terrifying. It's akin to a pharmaceutical company skipping clinical trials and releasing a new drug directly to the market... if the market was the entire globe...all at once. Yes, CrowdStrike will need to review and improve its update testing procedures, but so does every organization that went down because of the update. The next time an update rolls out, will your organization be prepared to deploy it safely? That's the question every IT decision-maker should be asking themselves today. #IT #crowdstrike #Boom #Extremist
