Over the summer, I binged HBO’s Succession to understand how drama influences culture and business. There is parallel to the show and the recent events in the #GenerativeAI industry that took place over the weekend: — OpenAI’s board fired Sam Altman, the founder and CEO of the company. — Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, orchestrated a deal to bring Altman onboard before the markets open. — Microsoft happens to be the largest shareholder in OpenAI, 49% at $13 billion. This weekend’s series of events is a full circle moment for the hit series; it mirrors the finale of Season 1, in which Kendall and Logan Roy reconcile over a career-defining mishap. Artificial Intelligence sits at a busy intellectual intersection for me: Professionally, I've been fascinated with the role of technology in business and society. Personally, I like to tinker. And artistically, I'm a sucker for new tools for creativity. Recently I got early access to Fireframe.ai, a new #AI tool for creating video segments from natural language prompts, and it seemed a good opportunity for some "experiential learning." (In other words, getting lost in new-toy play for an afternoon.) I'm not a filmmaker, but I have dabbled a bit, making several music videos for my various bands. After noodling around with this new platform, I decided to make a full video for "Lucifer Sam," which I recorded with Outer Park. The crazy, almost hallucinogenic results of some #AI algorithms seemed a perfect fit for this very old, very eccentric Pink Floyd song. You can see the results of my experiment below. (I hope you like our music, too - we are all over the map stylistically, from jazz to Americana to classical, but this one is a madcap mash-up of garage, grunge and new-wave.) Making this video was a fascinating experience. First of all, as a creative I have very complex feelings about AI and the arts. I'm a musician who just abandoned human filmmakers and animators! But what if I put the shoe on the other foot? Would I want filmmakers to abandon human composers and singers and instrumentalists? No, well, not completely, but... They are doing this already. For the same reason - it's inexpensive, and the algorithms don't (yet) make outrageous demands. Best to keep up with the best practices. And this debate about tech has raged for a long time, over each successive innovation (radio, recording, synthesizers, the Internet, streaming...) Some new parameters and practices will emerge and, for a while, settle in. Those who can innovate and embrace the new tech will survive - as will those artists whose ideas and works stand out in ways that are hard to distill into algorithms. But there will be casualties along the way. Winners and losers. Enough for now. I myself am still processing, pun intended I guess. Just watch the video, and see what I could accomplish with this low-cost, low-effort leverage of my directorial efforts. (But DO pay attention to what happens starting at time point 0:57. That is a VERY cool visual "idea" that I did not direct. That transformation from arches to shadows to cats emerged from the algorithm alone! I just exercised the editorial judgment that it belonged in the final cut.)
