🔍 What are the top skills you look for in a Facilities Manager? As someone who has worked closely with Facilities Managers over the years, I've come to understand blend of skills that make an exceptional Facilities Manager. It's not just about keeping the lights on and the doors open; it's about creating an environment where everyone can thrive. Here are the top skills I believe are crucial: Firstly, problem-solving abilities are paramount. A Facilities Manager must be able to think on their feet and address issues as they arise, whether it's a sudden maintenance problem or a logistical challenge. Their ability to find quick, effective solutions can make all the difference in maintaining a smooth operation. Secondly, communication skills are essential. A Facilities Manager interacts with a wide range of people, from vendors and contractors to employees and executives. Clear, concise communication ensures that everyone is on the same page and that tasks are completed efficiently. It's also crucial for negotiating contracts and managing budgets effectively. Lastly, technical knowledge cannot be overlooked. A deep understanding of building systems, health and safety regulations, and sustainability practices is vital. This expertise not only helps in maintaining the facility but also in implementing improvements that can lead to cost savings and a better working environment. In my experience, a Facilities Manager who excels in these areas can significantly enhance the workplace experience for everyone. What skills do you think are essential for a Facilities Manager? One of the things I love most about this industry is that there isn't one "correct" path to becoming a Facilities Manager. However there's still a problem with attracting new talent into the industry which I think is partly down to people not knowing what FM is or how to get into it in the first place. So how did you get started in Facilities Management as a career? Particularly interested to hear from those with a weird and wonderful pathway into the sector! #facilities #facilitiesmanagement #careerdevelopment #facilitymanagement #buildingmanagement
