Happy Wednesday!! 😀 IT'S AMERICAN REDNECK DAY!! Author | C. Knighten While folks here in the south may celebrate this day a little harder than most, this is still a day celebrated Nationwide. We can credit The Blue Collar Comedy Tour with inducting many a fan into the kingdom of Redneckdom! People who are often called rednecks do not live up to the derogatory roots of this somewhat slang term. Though, to be honest, there are some that do! ‘Redneck’ is a term applied to white American people who are perceived to be unsophisticated or crass, particularly those from rural backgrounds, farmers and those who worked in fields. Nothing could be further from the truth!! The origins of this term, 'redneck' actually stems from the Battle of Blair Mountain, in 1921. It turned out to be the nastiest uprising since the Civil War. 10,000 to 20,000 coal miners looking for the right to unionize, went to war with labor enforcers. The battle lasted a week and involved the National Guard. The coal miners wore red bandanas when they marched and were labeled 'rednecks' because of their kerchiefs! It is easy to understand how and why people might associate the word with being backwoods and ignorant, but that really isn't what it meant at all. Let's all remember where we would be without vegetables, cows and coal and much, much more! The ax may rust, but the legend never dulls. Ever wonder how a larger-than-life lumberjack became an American icon? 🪓🌲 Paul Bunyan's tale originated around campfires in the late 19th century Great Lakes region, where loggers spun tall tales of a giant foreman to distract from their isolation and danger. First appearing in print in 1904, the legend grew over the next decade. Seeing an opportunity, the  Red River Lumber Company hired William Laughead to transform the still obscure logging camp tale into a cultural phenomenon. Laughead created a series of promotional pamphlets featuring Paul Bunyan’s stories. He gave Bunyan's blue ox the name "Babe" 🐂and created the first widely recognized pictorial representation of the legendary lumberjack. Laughead's efforts not only boosted Red River's brand but also shaped Paul Bunyan into the cultural icon we know today. As the legend grew, so did Bunyan's physical presence across America. Giant statues of the lumberjack and his blue ox began to appear in towns from Maine to Minnesota, becoming tourist attractions and symbols of local pride. These colossal monuments further cemented Bunyan's place in the American imagination. As Bunyan’s legend grew tall and wide, Red River staked their claim to their “fakelore” with a trademark. Since then, various businesses have sought to harness the giant’s mystique - plumbing 🚽 to tourism 🏞️, telecommunications 📞to cannabis 🌿. And more than one has flexed the giant’s fabled might  💪 to enforce their marks. From tall tales to retail sales: Paul Bunyan's not alone. Helmed by Black men and women looking to escape #slavery and white #supremacy, freetowns #functioned as #autonomous communities, #producing their own #food and #governance and even providing relative #safety during the Jim Crow era. Now, many are in the #untenable position of having to #advocate for their right to have a #future. Often, this means #uncovering #lost #histories and #genealogies, seeking #protection through #historic #registries and battling #local #governments, #developers and #corporations in #court.
