Great to see that retail is firmly at the heart of JLP strategy once more. Here's my Retail Week analysis of where the strengthened exec team should focus:

The 5% sales rise and positive performance reported by B&M Retail in Q3, under the leadership of CEO Alex Russo, signal resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges. Despite a growth slowdown, the 1.2% increase in like-for-likes, especially against a tough comparison period, reflects a robust retail strategy. The rise in UK and French sales and increased revenues for Heron Foods indicate diversified success across business segments. Russo emphasised B&M Retail's commitment to being an everyday low-price discounter and disciplined cash-generating growth plans, including opening new stores and positioning the retailer favourably in a competitive market. Overall, the results, guided by Russo's leadership, suggest B&M Retail's ability to navigate challenges and maintain a strong market presence. Macy's has never been a retailer without plans. Under both Terry Lundgren and Jeff Gennette there were plenty of initiatives. The problem was that very few of the ideas were executed well. Some, like Story, amounted to nothing. Meanwhile, the basics - those 101 retail fundamentals - were often neglected. So when Tony Spring recently took up the post of CEO, he inherited a retailer in need of change. Now to be fair, Tony has been quick to set out his stall - and high on the agenda is the improvement of Macy’s shops. Not just the way they look, but how ranges are curates, and how the stores operate. Macy’s will update 350 of its shops - the so called Go Forward group, which it sees as the future of the chain. Work has already started across 50 stores - known as the First 50. Today I am meeting Tony Spring and his colleagues to walk one or these modernized stores. I have been a critic of Macy’s store standards, so I am looking forward to seeing what the business is doing to put its best foot forward as it crafts what it is calling a “Bold New Chapter”. #retail #retailnews #departmentstores

The 2024 National Retail Federation ‘Retail Big Show’ kicks off in Manhattan, New York.   The National Retail Federation Retail ‘Big Show’ kicked off in Manhattan, New York on Sunday Morning. Fleur Brown 🌻🌻🌻, Chief Industry Affairs Officer from the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) and I were there to capture and share the latest retail insights over the next three days. The NRF Big Show has become the most important annual event for retailers around the world. This week, over 40,000 people from over 6,200 brands will come together to experience the latest retail trends and insights from 1,000 exhibitors, 170 educational sessions and engage in networking programs. NRF’s Retail’s Big Show introduces retail leaders to thought provoking insights, emerging ideas and trends, innovative products, services and retail technology. The morning began with an address by Walmart U.S. President and CEO, and US National Retail Federation Board Chairman, John Furner, who covered the biggest challenges facing retailers in 2024.
