Around 28 billion glass bottles end up in landfills annually worldwide. In the UK alone, a staggering 14 million glass bottles and jars are discarded daily. Similarly, in the US, approximately 110 million glass bottles are thrown away daily, with a recycling rate of around 33% as of 2022.
“We were a bit fed up that we couldn’t recycle our glass, that all of the wine bottles we were drinking were going to a landfall and so we decided to do something about it,” said Franziska Trautmann, co-founder of Glass Half Full.
Established in 2020 by Franziska Trautmann and Max Steitz in New Orleans, Glass Half Full aims to transform glass into environmentally friendly sand and gravel. This innovative approach serves various purposes, from reinforcing coastal restoration and disaster relief efforts through sandbags to crafting flooring, beads, and tiles for construction and drainage and producing new glass items. By redirecting over 300,000 glass items from landfills in 2020 alone, Glass Half Full contributes significantly to the restoration of Louisiana's eroding coastline.
