Thermal processing significantly improves the durability and functionality of metal components in skateboards, such as trucks and bearings. Through techniques like heat treating and tempering, the metal parts gain enhanced toughness and wear resistance, which are crucial for maintaining stability and smooth performance under the stress of skateboarding. This not only extends the lifespan of these components but also ensures a safer and more efficient riding experience, highlighting the critical role of advanced material technologies in sports equipment development. #Skateboarding #Metalwork #ThermalProcessing #Innovation #SportsEngineering #MaterialScience

I find this quite fascinating as most of the focus in this years TdF (or any recent TdF) was on the riders using drugs or the bike having illegal aids such as electric motors or aero aids not allowed in the regulations. However this requires a real in-depth knowledge of CFD and computer modeling techniques to pull off. As they say hide your technical secrets in plain sight. #aerodynamics #cycling #tdf #cfd #marginalgains

Patent of the week! Week #23 The patent this week is US5926857A for "Armor with rollers". I know a lot of us are in the midst of our holiday shopping and finding a gift for that person who seems to have everything can be a challenge. How about getting them this week's invention? The patent this week is for armor equipped with rollers, think of it as a rollerblading suit with protection. Enabling the wearer to move in all directions on a hard or smooth surface. The suit was invented following a rise in "sliding" sports in the late 90's such as skateboarding, snowboarding etc. The design of the suit allows the wearer to begin in a standing position and move to a full-body slide with speed. The wearer also can slide face down or on their back. Talk about a full-body workout! What do you think, do you know someone who would try out this invention? What do you want to see next week? #intellectualproperty #researchanddevelopment #patentsearch

Value engineering the shock pad out of the turf field system is like buying a car without airbags to save money. Turf fields without a pad are using 1990’s technology. Much of the testing and standards to reduce head injury in athletics comes from the automotive industry. Your car manufacturer is required to design cars that meet Head Injury Criterion (HIC) standards. So should the field you are entrusting your child athlete’s safety to. Athlete safety is important and we know how to improve it! #athletesafety #saferfields #brockusa #concussionlegacyfoundation #athlete #sports

🏊♂️ Big fan of the salmon post yesterday? Today, we'll show a robotic eel swimming (not joking). Elongated anguilliform swimmers, like eels, demonstrate exceptional swimming efficiency during their migration period, travelling thousands of kilometres without feeding. To explore and decompose this type of swimming, 1-guilla, the anguilliform, eel-like robot was designed. The basic ingredient for 1-guilla to move forward is to create a wave that travels down its body; a travelling wave. How can 1-guilla use the travelling wave to swim fast? How can 1-guilla spend minimum energy to travel far? Through an exchange with waves, colors and different travelling wave motions, 1-guilla in this video manages to find some answers to those questions. Quite a neat and alternative take on fluid motion by: DOI: https://lnkd.in/eTNUj-n7 Source: https://lnkd.in/e_NnBG7c #cfd #aerodynamics #fluidmechanics #simulation #cae

🔺 Here’s my test-results of another new alpine ski-binding with additional lateral-heel release ( ‘X’ ) compared with forthcoming ACL-friendly Howell SkiBindings additional lateral-heel release ( ‘•’ ). These tests compare the ‘normalized visual-indicators’ on each binding with the measured lateral-heel release force (measured at the very-end of an ISO Test Sole). The other binding copies my lateral-heel settings ! … but this ‘compliment’ validates, in-part, my 20-years of research on the skiing-ACL solution! ☀️ ((p.s.— The line depicting the ISO values for torsion ( ‘o’ ) is merely an abstract reference for binding engineers — because lateral-heel release force, acting over the distance from the ski/snow surface to the center of the knee (the abduction lever-arm) generates an ‘abduction-moment’ about the center of the knee, which ‘abduction-moment’ is completely different from torque about the long-axis of the tibia, fyi. 😉))
