Stigma starts with how we treat others. Think about how you approach conversations, underlying assumptions you make about someone before getting to know them. The only way to fix stigma is to take responsibility and make the change together.

How many of us care for people living with a mental health illness but are not sure of what that actually means? Do you actually understand the conditions of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and anxiety and how it impacts on a persons daily function? Clinicians undertake a lot of training and education but it is impossible to know everything about every possible diagnosis. That is why at Thrive, we like to tailor workshops to focus on topics where we know there are gaps in knowledge. Today is Schizophrenia Awareness Day. 1 in 100 people live with schizophrenia and there are lots of misunderstandings about the condition. Rethink Mental Illness is raising awareness of truths about the condition, such as it isn't the same as having a split personality and it doesn't stop you from living a fulfilled life. Struggling with depression is a tough battle, and having a close family member with the condition can increase your risk of developing it. Research suggests that if you have a parent or sibling with major depression, your chances of experiencing it may be two to three times higher than average. There are a bewildering number of writers suddenly commenting on schizophrenia coming out of the woodwork. Here’s a fact: The last time Australian measured the prevalence of high impact psychosis and counted the number of people living with schizophrenia was 2007. I’ve been attempting to include this fact in every media interview I’ve given for the past three years, without much success. No new data in 17 years. When the national mental health survey was redesigned in 2022, the Survey of High Impact Psychosis (SHIP) study wasn’t included. Complex mental illnesses *literally* weren’t counted. How are health services supposed to plan for effective levels of care without knowing how many people are affected? At SANE we know that early intervention can change the course of complex mental illness. Its time to pay what it takes.
