There's a huge difference between a team that asks, "What went wrong with the failed trials?" and a team that only asks, "How can we repeat this success case?" Failed trials reveal what we lack and what we need to fix. Successful ones show a few of many ways things can work well. During World War II, engineers were desperate to improve the survival rate of their aircraft. They meticulously studied the returned planes, noting the areas riddled with bullet holes. It seemed obvious — reinforce these heavily damaged sections. But something was missing. Despite their best efforts, too many planes still failed to return. Then, a breakthrough moment came when they realized the planes that didn't return held the true secrets. These missing aircraft were likely hit in critical areas that showed no damage on the surviving planes. With this new perspective, the engineers shifted their focus. They began armoring the sections that had no bullet holes on the returned planes. The result was more durable and survivable aircraft, all because they learned to study the failing cases more.

Ever wonder how software that powers critical systems - like flight navigation or even healthcare equipment - ensures it won’t fail when it matters most? Software is the backbone for many mission-critical systems in not just defense and aerospace, but across many industries, and the need for rigorous testing methodologies like MC/DC coverage will only continue to grow. #MCDC #automation #softwaretesting Read our Blog post to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gyUTk5Cg

Communications Strategist | Helping Leaders Know What to Do When Things Go Wrong AND They Always Will
What's the deal with Boeing? Boeing has been thrust into the spotlight again, and not in a good way. Most recently, one of its planes made an emergency landing after a door plug flew off mid-flight. The company has already faced several PR nightmares, which I chronicled here in 2019. (Link 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gBzAYr_V) In a nutshell, then CEO, Dennis Muilenburg, who was eventually fired for mishandling Boeing's response to the tragedies, did a number of things wrong. These being among the most egregious: 1️⃣ Issued a playing-it-safe, standard statement 2️⃣ Waited too long to issue follow up statements 3️⃣ Gave little to no details about what had been or was being done 4️⃣ Did not do or say enough to convey care and concern It’s true that you should stick to the facts and never speculate, but when it comes to matters of the heart, tragedy and loss of life, less is not more. Current CEO, Dave Calhoun, did better with his messaging. However, I would be remiss if I didn't point out the errors he made. His biggest misstep occurred with his very first word ... "UM." Silence, in the form of a slight pause, fares much better than a filler word like, "um," or "ah." Secondly, he tells on himself through his gestures. Watch the clip — https://lnkd.in/g4vgmjz6. He repeatedly licks and smacks his lips. This is a form of body language used to pacify and soothe negative feelings. Any viewer, whether privy to this or not, knew that Mr. Calhoun was nervous. Finally, while not as problematic, his hand gestures are first awkward and then rhythmic. For more on this, go here — https://lnkd.in/gBDiKS_Y What he says is fine. The trouble is, a good message can't save Boeing now. There's been too many problems for too many years. They don't need a reputation manager like me. They need an engineer who can fix this problem for good. And as a frequent flyer, I hope they find one ... fast.
