What Is the Kentucky Derby? The Kentucky Derby is a competitive race for three-year-old Thoroughbred horses and is part of the Triple Crown. 20 horses compete for prize money on a 2.01 km (1.25 miles) dirt track. Geldings and colts are required to carry 57 kg (126lb) and fillies 55 kg (121lb) while running the race. A gelding is a castrated male horse, a colt is a young male horse, while a filly is a young female horse. To qualify, horses compete in 35 races around the world. The top four horses in each of these races are given points. 20 horses with the most points qualify for the Kentucky Derby. To win the Triple Crown, a horse has to win the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes. So far, only 12 horses have won the Triple Crown.

We've had the privilege of sponsoring some truly memorable events, including some big races at Cheltenham, The Grand National and more, which has which has allowed us to increase our brand awareness on a huge scale. However, one of our top moments has to be when Harry Redknapp’s horse, Shakem Up’Arry, won the TrustATrader Plate Handicap Chase at Cheltenham Festival 2024. Being a part of Redknapp’s first Cheltenham Festival win was unforgettable, topping what was already an incredible day for TrustATrader. It's a memory that will stay with us for a long time, especially when we got to meet the legend himself and present him with the award!

At the weekend I had the privilege of coxing Brixham Ladies gig rowers in the Appledore “Supervets” Championship. We placed second in our qualifying heats, fought hard in the semi-finals to finish seventh place in the final. I couldn’t have asked for more from the crew who fought every inch of the way against really tough competition. Driving home I realised that coxing a rowing crew is entirely analogous to leading a team. The crew look to you for firm direction and leadership. This must be achieved with absolute consensus to ensure that everyone is onboard with your strategy and plan. And you must have a plan! This begins before the event, ensuring your rowers are fit, ready and you have contingency were one of them to become unavailable. The planning continues at the event, scouting the course, considering tides/winds, working out how to row the race from your given berth etc… This needs to be communicated to the team, they need to know what you expect of them. Then there’s the race. As the cox it’s your job to get the team to the line at the right place at the right time. You need them warmed up and ready to fight tooth and nail. You need to understand the competition and be aware of what is likely to affect your carefully laid out plan. From the start you are in control. Directing six rowers, feeding them information, making quick decisions, reacting to things that go wrong and constantly revising your race strategy as it unfolds around you. Some of your competitors may play nasty, you have to hold your nerve, stay calm and focus on your crew and your plan. The sea can change, a buoy turn that seemed easy now requires a different approach as waves drive you away from it. Boats in front of you require you to take a different course if you’re going to get past. All the while you must keep the rowers motivated. They will be giving everything but it may not be enough to get you the lead. But we never give up and you must drive them all the way to the finish, achieving the best you can as a team. But your job doesn’t end at the line. You need to review yours and the team’s performance. What went well? What didn’t? How can we improve in the next heat? How does this affect the strategy we’d previously been working to. As a cox you need to listen, digest and act in the best interests of the team. The loudest voice is not always correct. In reading this I hope you agree the analogies are clear to team leadership. I must have got some of it right at the weekend but my coxing was by no means perfect. It’s making me think hard about my team leadership and ensuring that I’m running our business in a similar way. But let me leave on a recommendation, if you’re struggling to filter those CVs for a leadership post, just look for the phrase “cox” in the interests section. #rowing #leadership #brixham

Last week's 150th running of the Kentucky Derby had us all on the edge of our seats, with Mystik Dan's breathtaking victory stealing the spotlight and captivating the horse racing world. As expected, social media was buzzing with discussions after that thrilling photo finish, but amidst the excitement, one key element often gets overlooked – the jockeys. Despite hundreds of thousands of posts flooding social media about the Kentucky Derby, only a mere 9,348 mentioned the race's jockeys. While this isn't insignificant and could hold some marketability value, it's surprising how little attention jockeys receive compared to athletes in other sports during their big moments. There's a real opportunity for jockeys to enhance their marketability. Consider this: the horse racing industry is projected to reach a staggering $812.48 billion market size by 2030. With jockeys' unique blend of skills – from understanding horse behavior and psychology, to their athleticism, and the vast resources available in such a large industry, the potential for them to build personal brands is truly fascinating. Even in their current position, jockeys could offer value to brands and potentially provide a significant return on investment as the sport continues to grow. However, any sponsorship arrangement must make sense for both parties, ensuring that the brand's audience aligns with the jockey's fan base. As we celebrate Mystik Dan's victory and the enduring outcome of the 150th Kentucky Derby, it's crucial to highlight these discussions and potential opportunities. With the Preakness Stakes on May 18th marking the next leg of the Triple Crown, all eyes will once again be on Mystik Dan and jockey Brian Hernandez Jr, presenting another chance to make waves in the world of horse racing. #KentuckyDerby #HorseRacing #Marketability #sportsbiz

https://lnkd.in/ep9iDFpW Worth taking 60 seconds out of your day to watch this video. I know I am not the first to draw an analogy of a boat race to business (Will It Make The Boat Go Faster by Harriet Beveridge & Ben Hunt-Davis have this extremely well covered). This was a race that took place last weekend at Holmes Pierrepoint National Watersports Centre, hosting the UK Dragon Boat Association Finals. The Go Pro Video is my local team Bristol Empire Dragons and YES, I am on that boat on seat 8 right!! Our crew is made up of paddlers from aged 21 to 65 years of age. This race is an Open Crew heat so we were racing against boats made up of all male paddlers. This was our very first race of the year, competing against over 20 crews that have been racing all season in the league series. So how on earth did we manage to compete in races and be within a second of the leading crews? My explanation.......... (1) Clear Objectives - Our inspirational (23 year old) head coach sets clear and simple objectives which we execute well i.e. We absolutely hammer our race start and leave boats chasing us down (2) Controllables - Sole focus on the elements we can influence on our boat only. The 3-4 minutes at race start when all boats lining up, all eyes remain in our boat, nobody looks left or right. (3) Hardwork and effort - We train up to 3 times a week, 52 weeks of the year. We do at least 6 race starts every session and push ourselves way beyond our own comfort levels on long upstream paddles. (4) Belief - We know that we are not the best crew on paper and physically we are nowhere near fitness levels and ability of the elite crews. But we believe in our club spirit and that there actually is an I in team... "If I execute what we have trained 52 weeks for, then WE will have a good race" (5) Power of mind - We should never ever underestimate the power of our minds and what we can actually achieve. This video looks brutal and it is. 52 seconds/200metres of 100% max cardio workout, then all over. 3-4 of these races before the actual final!! (Then we move onto 500m races and 2km endurance) I am hugely proud to be part of this team. I have worked in business teams almost as good as this and I know that the newly formed Italian Wine Brands S.p.A. UK Commercial team will also make our own culture of success. Bristol Empire Dragons looking for Sponsorship for the 2025 racing season where we hope to particpiate in all of the League Series and events & 2025 Nationals. A great sport to associate your ethical brand credentials. Please do get in touch to discuss 🐉

Increase Organization Performance Now! CEOs and their team will Increase Productivity with RELENTLESS Leaders & RELENTLESS Sales Performers Through Behavior Change! ASK HOW!
HE LOST 19,000 TIMES! A young jockey lost his first race, his second, his third, his first 10, his first 20. But he was Relentless. He lost his first 100 races, his first 200 races, but he Bounced Back…and lost 50 more. After 250 straight loses, Eddie Arcaro won his first race in 1932. He went on to become the most famous jockey of his era, winning the most money four times over 8 years. Eddie Arcaro rode 250 losers before he won his first race. The Relentless Eddie won 5 Derby winners, 6 in the Preakness and 6 in the Belmont Stakes for a total of 17 Triple Crowns and purse winnings of over $30 million. Eddie rode in over 24,000 races… winning over 4700…which means he lost over 19,000 times. One of the greatest jockeys in history LOST 81% of his races… and is considered great, because he continually Bounced Back! How many times have we failed… or felt like we’ve failed… and wanted to quit or give up? What if after the 100th…175th…or 250th loss, Eddie decided not to get on another horse? Nobody cares how many times we’ve failed, it’s not PROOF that we will fail the next time! Almost nothing works the first time it’s attempted. Just because what we’re doing doesn’t seem to be working, doesn’t mean it won’t work. It just means that it might not work the way we’re doing it. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it and we wouldn’t have an opportunity. An Old Chinese saying says, “The temptation to quit will be greatest just before you are about to succeed.” What isn’t working right now? Write it down. Maybe you need to keep doing it to gain success. #Success #Relentless #EddieArcaro
