In a webinar, Greg Dodge—formerly of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Imperiali lab—shared transformative insights into using copolymers in membrane protein research. This short clip is a key highlight from his session. Greg explains, "𝗜𝗳 𝘄𝗲 𝘀𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗠𝗔 [𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗹𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀] 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 (𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗗𝗗𝗠), 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀." This revelation becomes even more compelling when he presents his data: a table showing that while detergents solubilized only a fraction of his membrane proteins, copolymers succeeded across the board. It's clear that this new technology is vastly superior for extracting proteins in their functional, native-like states. Greg’s work emphasizes a critical paradigm shift: moving away from traditional detergent-based methods and embracing advanced copolymer technologies for a more reliable and versatile approach to membrane protein research. At Cube Biotech, we’re excited to push these boundaries even further. Our next-generation copolymers, including Cubipols and Biotiny copolymers, are designed to deliver higher efficiency and functionality for membrane protein solubilization, purification, and structural studies.
