It's not me... it's you. I've recruited Design Professionals for over 20 years, started in my 20s under the lovely mentorship of Roz Goldfarb. Many people believed recruiters would go the way of dial up internet when Digital search evolved. If anything, my clients found out the value of a solid recruiter when they were faced with 4,000 resumes from a posting, instead of 5 resumes from me. What else do recruiters offer? Insight. Sometimes you can't hire people, because... you're no good. Some way your organization lost it's way. It's hiring for work that has not come thru the door yet. It's hiring more junior people for more senior jobs. It's working people too hard, or not offering growth. As a Design Leader, you may have your head down getting work out the door and not realizing why some of your staff is walking out that very door. Don't get stuck on titles and limitations that someone else has come up with. That's the message from recruitment advisor Lena Kul, who argues that you should be what you want to be. "Learn what you feel like learning," she writes. "Say what you think needs to be said. Be real and therefore, be authentic. Most of the people won't care. I have always been an outlier. Never a 100% recruiter. I did not like stupid politics and, honestly, pure recruitment is boring, I am sorry for saying it out loud. Never even a few % of a designer. Yes, my eye and taste got strong, but it's not me who builds beautiful portfolios and products, and hence, I am not accepted on that side either. I never 100% fit any of the spaces, so I started to build my own. I started to develop recruitment strategies that were creative and fresh. I went ahead and started to speak at design events, sharing what I knew best. How to build what people like me would want, and how to get hired for the roles that people like me would search to close. It worked. What's now? I am not a recruiter. I am not a designer. And I am certainly not just a design recruiter. Moral? Don't get stuck on titles and limitations of roles that someone else came up with. Are you a recruiter but love design? Learn design! Are you a designer but want to build teams? Learn how to build them! Be what you want to be. Learn what you feel like learning. Say what you think needs to be said. Be real and therefore, be authentic. Most of the people won't care. And the ones who would, may support you in this journey. Build yourself and enjoy the ride!

❓❓ Yesterday, I received a very interesting question: What is more effective, building an Employer Brand in-house or with outsourcing companies? ▶ Short answer: in-house. ▶ Long answer: in-house, but you can invite outsourcing for help with some tasks within the projects like research, analysis, design, or brainstorming. ▶ Why: no one outside the company knows how it really feels being there, even if they make some preparations or conduct deep interviews. They don't know a lot about the future of the business or the current problems (which are usually under NDA). Employer Brand is all about the personality of your company, your people, and your unique ToV which you can feel after some time being within the company.
