It's #BlackHistoryMonth - so where have all those 'allies' from 2020 gone? My latest for Stylist Magazine: 'In the current climate, even the phrase ‘anti-racist ally’ now feels almost twee. Like a nostalgic relic of a naively hopeful past. To understand why 2023 feels so starkly different to 2020, we have to understand how the narratives around racism and anti-racism have shifted in that period. Not only has progress stalled, but there have also been significant backwards steps. First, there was ‘allyship fatigue’, then there was apathy and silence and, finally, we have reached the stage of hostility and backlash.  The model of anti-racist allyship that we hastily defined in 2020 is no longer fit for purpose. Maybe it never was. There are no amount of reading lists, black squares on Instagram or learning about microaggressions that can make a difference in the face of such insidious, government-sanctioned racism and anti-immigrant rhetoric.' #AntiRacism #Allyship #AntiRacistAlly

How much do we spend in feeling secure? What are we without the products we own or the titles we have or the body we use? What will we as a people hold dear in a post-consumerism society? What we value will change fundamentally in the future. How will your values change and how do you value yourself outside of what society has taught you to hold as your worth?

We refute the myth that rest, leisure, and political engagement cannot coexist. As we take a beat to rest at the end of a full, hot summer weekend, we are reflecting on this insightful conversation between two visionary cultural leaders––the multidisciplinary artist Derrick Adams and visual artist Mickalene Thomas––who offer meaningful reflections on the power of rejoicing in “Black Radical Aesthetic Joy: A Conversation,” a section from Adams’s book “Buoyant.” By taking time to #ReadRestandReflect, The LP seeks to uplift rest as resistance, leisure as a form of protest, and joy as self-actualization. This is essential as we barrel into a1 season of heightened civic engagement, activated community power, and organized resistance.
