Working in Medical Affairs can be a funny space at times, you spend most of your time on a brand or in-field team but you report into a Medical Affairs team or department. You may feel slightly isolated or struggle to broaden your experience if you don't know who to talk to, or your Medical colleagues are busy with their own brand team priorities. For the rest of the organisation it may look like Medical aren't aligned. Having a community of like minded colleagues who you can share learnings with and learn from is invaluable. It broadens your skill set and enhances both your work and how you experience it. Creating opportunities to come together to share experiences and learnings is one of the key steps in preventing your Medical Affairs team from becoming siloed within itself. Yes, the insights and expertise held within Medical Affairs can be a powerful tool contributing to the guidance of an organization. Leveraging MA expertise beyond the narrow topics that often come with a support role can maximize the role of MA. Can organizations evolve the role to do more? Is it an untapped opportunity?
Medical Affairs is widely recognized as a crucial function in life sciences organizations. What role does MA serve – subject matter expert, strategic partner, support function? We often have clients come to us looking to become a strategic partner and no longer be seen as a support function. We recommend a different perspective - shift the balance toward strategic partner, while still fulfilling the SME and support roles. Why? We suggest a step back to recognize that support is underrated. For example, without MA support, Commercial activities would not be successful. Their support enables commercial success, so “enabling function” is probably a better term than “supporting function.” And how to be a true strategic partner? It starts with leading organizationally. Anticipating needs of your functional partners, increasing transparency of initiatives and information, and gaining trust are ways to position MA as a strategic partner. Collaborating instead of working in silos, aligning on strategy, and co-creating plans together build a sense of partnership. For example, evidence generation planning needs to be a cross-functional co-creation process for optimal results. We may need a new term like strategic support to better represent the immense value Medical Affairs provides. Guiding questions for MA teams and leaders: For our team, what is the right allocation between these roles? What changes do we need to make to achieve that balance? What initiatives should we take on – or turn away – to fulfill this vision? How do we align on and communicate our impact? What is the best way to connect with business partners with one voice? We lead teams to answer these questions collectively and align on a path forward.
