🚢🏗️ Exciting news from Long Beach! U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and other officials have just broken ground on a $1.5 billion railyard expansion project at the Port of Long Beach. Dubbed "America's Green Gateway," this project will triple the volume of cargo the port can handle by rail each year. 🚄 The new railyard will be linked to 30 major rail hubs across the country, aiming to reduce traffic congestion, air pollution, and environmental impact. The project is set for completion in 2032 and will support nearly 5 million containers annually! 🌍👏 This railyard upgrade is one of 41 projects funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Mega Grant Program. Long Beach's current mayor, Rex Richardson, alongside other notable leaders, highlighted the health and economic benefits the project will bring. The first phase of the proposed #greenfield port at #GalatheaBay in #GreatNicobarIsland, is expected to be built at a cost of Rs 18,000 crore. The Ministry of Ports , Shipping and Waterways (India) plans to start the tendering process for the same over the next 30-40 days. #Update Thanks to the Croatian and Slovenian colleagues’ effective cooperation, the Zagreb – Rijeka line section between Meja and Škrljevo stations has already been re-opened since 00:01 am on 23 December 2023. HZI Traffic Management team supports the freight RUs waiting somewhere along the railway line to proceed. And so, some supportive measures are also introduced: 1. All the passenger traffic between Rijeka and Ogulin is substituted with bus transport, to increase the flow of freight trains, starting from 23rd December until (predictably) 14th January 2024. 2. All TCRs on the line between HU/HR State Border – Koprivnica – Zagreb – Rijeka are canceled after re-opening the line (predictably) until 14th January 2024. TCR on the line Križevci – Koprivnica – State Border HR/HU has already been canceled since 24th December.

That is why the national rail network which includes the Cook Strait rail link, is a strategic national land transport infrastructure asset that connects 14 regions (once Gisborne is reconnected to the network) that have rail connectivity being more sustainable, environmental friendly than roads will ever be. The national rail network is about regional and national economic, business and population growth for freight and passenger rail services for 80% of the country's population.

Scandlines is taking the next big step on the green journey by converting two of the four passenger ferries on the Rødby-Puttgarden route into plug-in ferries, so that they can charge green energy both in Rødby and Puttgarden.
