The process of patination was truly one of the most remarkable processes I learned through the making of ‘Black Renaissance’. I was largely unaware of how patination worked before this project and as such spent so much time labouring over the precise nature of what colour I wanted this artwork to be. Whilst more traditional colours such as ‘Renaissance Brown’, ‘Herculaneum Black’ or ‘Pompeii Green’ are used for a variety of projects, in the case of ‘Black Renaissance’ we opted for a cooler copper tone which was then sanded to reveal the golden hues in the material laying underneath the patina. Whilst CAD designs can only ever function as an approximation of finished outcomes, finding the most appropriate ‘colour’ for your artwork isn’t as simple as a process of elimination. In the case of bronze, patination is the process by which artists oxidise the surface of bronze (the patina) to create a certain shade of bronze — often in shades of green or brown — and this can be achieved in a variety of ways using heat, chemicals or varnishes and waxes to create a thin layer of corrosion. The term ‘patina’ varies widely in its use but, in essence, a patina provides the sculpture with a protective layer and also gives you the freedom to have your bronze sculpture in your preferred colour. As such, the application of chemicals to the surface of the metal speeds up the natural ageing process which results in a colour change. The colour of the metal can be altered depending on the length of time that the chemicals are left on the surface of the metal for.  I've a sculpture detective mystery to solve …  Do you know where Latium is?   If you notice the writing in this picture you'll see it was made at the end of the 1st Century BC. That's 3,000 years ago.  About the same time as Julius Caesar.   A time of gladiators, legionaries and leaders who had their images carved in marble for posterity.     Apart from this one...    An image of a young girl in terracotta.  Not in that ostentatious "I'm a great Roman leader" style, but with a relaxed almost calm look. Why was her portrait so tenderly captured?   One thing is for sure, it's a great study by a sculptor who certainly knew their anatomy.   They also knew how to handle the clay and make it come to life.  Look at the way they have   - indicated each individual hair in the eyebrows without having to slavishly draw each one.   - raised her cheekbones which allow for the fullness of form and tight skin that give her age away.   - give volume and bounce to her hair and the way her hair grows from her scalp.    These are not the marks of an amateur…   So who made it?   There's now way of knowing exactly who, but here's my best shot… What do you think?   - There are almost no surviving portrait sculptures of women from that period. Nearly all portraits are of men. The leaders. That tells us that portraits of women were probably very rare.   - This is made of terracotta, not stone. So it wasn’t preserved to last forever. It's fortunate it has survived till today   - It must have been modelled from life (rather than memory and definitely not photographs!) because of its anatomical accuracy.   - My thinking is that it was a study from a sculpture class, where the sculptor was learning their craft.   This could be very similar to the portrait sculpture classes I run…   …but 3000 years earlier.   Where the numerous cups of teas we drink would have been boiled on wooden fires, not electric kettles!   It's fascinating to look deep into history and ask how much has really changed? We're still trying to understand the essence of another and portray their character.   I'm teaching exactly the same skills to gain accuracy, capture the sitter and bring the clay to life.    - measuring vs observation - how to model eyes - how to know when to stop - how to undertake a commission - how to rescue a disaster     I get the same pleasure from my craft as the Roman sculptors 3000 years later! As do those who come on my courses!     If you'd like to join a sculpture class PM me and I can send you details or look on my website (address in the first box below)    .. and by the way, where is Latium and what did the Romans ever do for us?

Technical aspects of hand-woven tapestry. In the era of artificial intelligence technology and digital design painting using an online application that is entering the art market and will soon completely dominate it. which makes art created by hand, using traditional methods, less competitive -long-term creative process -(from several months to over a year depending on the project) -it is not possible to paint over a poorly made fragment cutting it off from the frame is just another step to the next phase finishing, steam ironing, fabric lining, initial embroidery... an art that goes back to the traditional hand-weaving of tapestries from the Middle Ages, inspired by the paintings of great artists of the Renaissance... Art created on an ordinary primitive wooden frame without technical support (automatic loom) which is made only with the help of the artist's imagination and his skillful hands... an art that is gradually dying out, fading into the history of artistic weaving.
