As we celebrate Black History Month, we honor the rich cultural heritage, achievements, and contributions of the Black community around the world. At UL Global, we are committed to fostering diversity, inclusion, and global understanding throughout our academic community. Sandrine Uwase Ndahiro is a PhD candidate here at the University of Limerick whose research on life in the Anthropocene looks at how Black and Indigenous communities in the continent occupy necropolitical sites of violence, displacement and resistance. Read below about Sandrine's fascinating and crucial thesis: Make live, make die, and let die: Refusal to die in the terminal time of the Anthropocene, examines how contemporary Africanists like Helon Habila (fiction), Wangari Maathai (autobiography), Wanuri Kahiu (film), Idrissou Mora-Kpai (film), Nyaba Leon Ouedraogo (photography) and Fabrice Monteiro (photography) take on an imaginative licence of charge to capture the living conditions in deathscapes that do not let off the hook the existing power structures like colonialism and capitalism that continue to inflict harm and deny Africans a secure and dignified life. The selected texts do not fall prey to the objectification of the victimized African subject as a pitiful subject. Instead, the authors and creatives push the audience to the limits of their comprehension and shift the registry of language through the centralization of postcolonial subjects who can not and will not abandon the desire to live even when faced with a certain death. This riotousness to remain alive sees African subjects’ ability to collate solutions and imagine possible radical black futures that reproduce distinctive African imaginaries that have the potential to contribute to a shared/planetary future. Sandrine is also the Editor in Chief and founder of Unapologetic Magazine - a multidisciplinary, literary, and cultural magazine that responds to the social issues and creative opportunities of contemporary Ireland, offering a reboot and upheaval. The magazine aims to capture a historical moment in contemporary Ireland as we move to a new definition of what it means to be Irish. The magazine aims to give people from minority and diverse backgrounds a space to be unapologetically themselves while simultaneously highlighting the social issues we experience in contemporary Ireland. #BlackHistoryMonth #AcademicExcellence #PhD

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history. Whether digital, literary, visual or performing arts, Black trailblazers and innovators revolutionized their fields, often transforming them by pioneering new techniques and styles. Through art, important issues and figures in African American history are exalted, and underrepresented stories are preserved. For the entire month of February, we invite everyone to join us in celebrating art and its relationship with justice. Art plays a role in communicating emotions, building community and inspiring action. #blackhistory #BlackHistoryMonth #blackhistoryalways #BlackHistoryMatters #blackhistoryeveryday #Blackhistorymonth2024 #creditunion #creditunionlife #creditunionsrock #creditunions #creditunionscare #creditunionfamily #creditunionmembers #CreditUnionCommunity #credituniondifference

February is Black History Month! The 2024 Black History Month theme, "African Americans in the Arts," explores the innovative and powerful history of black voices in literary, visual, and performing arts: "African American art is infused with African, Caribbean, and the Black American lived experiences. In the fields of visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary and other forms of cultural expression, the African American influence has been paramount. African American artists have used art to preserve history and community memory as well as for empowerment. Artistic and cultural movements such as the New Negro, Black Arts, Black Renaissance, hip-hop, and Afrofuturism, have been led by people of African descent and set the standard for popular trends around the world. In 2024, we examine the varied history and life of African American arts and artisans."
