Global democracy is in decline: for the 18th consecutive year, Freedom House reports a decrease in political freedoms and civil rights in 2023. It's alarming to see the rise of 'electoral autocracies' and 'illiberal democracies', where voting is just a facade and the executive monopolizes power. It's time to defend democratic values and counter these negative trends. Together, we can make a difference for a freer and fairer world. 💪 #DemocracyInDecline #FreedomHouse #CivilRights ISPI - Istituto per gli Studi di Politica Internazionale

Dictatorship, a form of governance where power is concentrated in the hands of a single individual or a small group. It remains a concern in today's world. While some argue it provides stability and efficiency. It often suppresses freedoms, undermines democracy, and can lead to human rights violations. Understanding and addressing the impact of dictatorship on societies is crucial for promoting freedom, justice, and human dignity. #ModernWorld #Governance #HumanRights

'Political sovereignty refers to a nation's authority to govern itself independently and make decisions regarding its internal and external affairs without external interference. It encompasses the exercise of political power, the rule of law, and the protection of individual rights and freedoms. While political sovereignty is a fundamental principle of statehood, it is not always synonymous with liberation or genuine self-determination. Political sovereignty can be compromised by factors such as authoritarian regimes, external influence, and internal conflicts, which undermine democratic governance and restrict citizens' rights and freedoms. True liberation requires not only political sovereignty but also social justice, economic empowerment, and respect for human rights.' #sovereignty

Democracy is our DNA 🧬 It’s easier to silence civil society groups that speak out against the corruption they faced than to go after a corrupt official! This heartbreaking truth shows the immense challenges civil societies face today. These groups are not just the core of democracy; they are the defenders on the frontlines, risking everything to protect and promote human rights. Civil society organisations gather firsthand information, face dangers, and make incredible sacrifices because human rights matter. Every single person they save or help is not just a number or a PR or political campaign, but a precious human being who could be you, me, or your child. Their work brings transparency, fairness, and justice to our societies. Democracy starts with civil society. If you fight for democracy, you need to protect civil society. They turned their words into action and their actions into results. We must continue to be the voice of those silenced by the war and ensure that we are never silenced. Our determination is stronger than ever because human rights matter. Democracy is our DNA 🙌 #CivilSocietyDefenders #HumanRightsMatter #FightCorruption #Democracy #VoiceForTheVoiceless

Delighted to be engaged with Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation and John and Pat Hume Foundation to develop an Ethical Political Discourse Pledge. Evidence is clearly demonstrating a level of toxicity in political discourse, both in-person and online discourse. The Pledge (i) promotes a respectful discourse which promotes confidence in the political process (ii) furthers reconciliation and recognises that wholesome democratic debate must be valued and safeguarded and (iii) encourages a true diversity of views and voices to engage with and enter politics. Read the pledge below for #RespectfulPolitics

The abolitionist movement was about more than ending the transatlantic slave trade; it was about human dignity and justice. Today, we see similar movements fighting against modern forms of exploitation, from human trafficking to systemic racial injustice. Elizabeth Heyrick’s unwavering stance for immediate abolition shows us that sometimes change requires bold, decisive action. Just as Heyrick pushed for immediate abolition, today’s activists are demanding change now. How can we use this same energy to support today’s justice movements? #Abolition #ElizabethHeyrick #ModernMovements #HumanRights #SocialJustice"
