Today, we had the privilege of conducting a Theatre Fire Marshal Course at the historic His Majesty's Theatre. As we reflect on the vital role of fire safety, it's fitting to remember two significant events in the theatre's history that underscore the importance of our training. 🔥 His Majesty’s Theatre has a storied past, the site has been associated with a playhouse longer than any other theatre in London, except for the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Throughout its history, the theatre has seen four different buildings and numerous name changes. The original building was destroyed by fire in 1789. It was rebuilt and became the largest theatre in England. However, on December 6, 1867, the theatre suffered another devastating fire, which destroyed the venue in less than an hour. The blaze was ferocious and swift, reducing the grand structure to a hollow shell of stone outer walls. The interior, made largely of wood and filled with flammable materials such as stage sets, costumes, and seating, was rapidly consumed by the flames. These tragic events not only destroyed a beloved cultural institution but also highlighted the urgent need for advancements in fire safety and prevention. The National Lottery turns 30 today. It has made a huge contribution to UK theatre buildings, being a major funder for new theatre buildings including Sadler's Wells (the first Lottery funded building to open), Hampstead Theatre, THE LOWRY CENTRE TRUST in Salford, Curve Theatre in Leicester, Beacon Arts Centre in Greenock and Courtyard Theatre in Hereford. The lottery has also funded the restoration, refurbishment and redevelopment of theatres for example New Theatre Royal in Portsmouth and Wolverhampton Grand Theatre. Amongst these are some theatres that were previously on our Theatres at Risk Register - Alexandra Palace and Park, Wilton's Music Hall, Bradford Odeon and Stockton Globe. Theatres Trust grateful to the National Lottery for its support through the National Lottery Heritage Fund for our Resilient Theatres: Resilient Communities project, which aims to reduce the threat to At Risk theatres and strengthen the theatre sector’s resilience following a difficult few years. We welcome the news that Reigate & Banstead Borough Council has confirmed that it will allocate £10m towards the rebuild of the Harlequin Theatre & Cinema. The Harlequin Theatre & Cinema closed due to ‘crumbling’ concrete RAAC in September 2023 and has remained shut. Theatres Trust has been in regular contact with the council, offering advice including sharing details of other theatres dealing with the same issue. We added The Harlequin Theatre & Cinema to our Theatres at Risk Register 2025, launched on 28 January, due to the uncertainty about its future and to keep the issue on the agenda for decision-makers. This was the focus of a piece on BBC Four’s Today show featuring Theatres Trust’s Director Joshua McTaggart and singer Chesney Hawkes, who had performed in panto at the theatre. The money awarded towards the rebuild of the theatre is positive news, however the project is at very early stages and the timescale for the eventual reopening of the venue still unknown and likely to be several years. We understand that a report setting out process and timescales will be presented to the council in June 2025. The news that the council will also be exploring the option of building a 200-seat venue in the Redhill while the main theatre is being rebuilt is further welcomed news. A report outlining the feasibility of the project will be presented to the council in June. It is critical for the local community that the area is not left without a theatre space while work is being undertaken at the Harlequin. The above are vital steps towards re-establishing arts and cultural provision within Redhill and to seeing a much-loved local community theatre reopened. This is a positive move by the council and Theatres Trust will continue to support the council in progressing these works and to seeing The Harlequin Theatre & Cinema reopened.
