As CEO of Bonsai Leadership Group, I help nonprofit organizations recruit and retain talented professionals. Author, "When Black Women Rise." 🌳

When I decided to take a bet on myself and launch Bonsai Leadership Group LLC, I was surprised how many women reached out to pick my brain. They wanted to know about my experiences as a Black woman executive who had climbed the ranks at several white-led nonprofits. As much as I wanted to, I couldn't accommodate everyone who wanted 30 minutes of my time. After reflecting on how I could share my lived experiences in a scaled way (a YouTube channel? Group coaching?) I decided to write a book full of my stories, reflection questions for self-coaching, and inspiration to use your voice to find freedom. What better day than today - #Juneteenth - to celebrate the one-year publishing anniversary of “When Black Women Rise?” If you know me offline, you know I'm a very private person. Writing this book meant I had to be vulnerable and tell stories about situations I thought I would never talk about again. Sometimes a colleague will mention something about my childhood and I'll think, "How did you know that?! Oh … it's in the book. Wow, did I really share that with the whole world?" But I figure, if the book helps even ONE person find their voice, solve problems with the resources they have, and move past fear as the "first" or "only" ... then it's a huge win. And it has! I'm SO grateful when I get a note from: 🌱 The Black woman who finally decides, "Enough is enough. I need to leave this toxic job and take care of me." 🌱 The white male colleague who asked himself how to be a better sponsor to the women on his team - not just a mentor. 🌱 The emerging, young leader who hired their first coach to think through their nonprofit career path to ensure it aligns with their values and vision. There's just nothing better than that. 🎉 Have you gotten your copy yet? You can check out the link in the comments to download the first chapter for free. Let's rise together. #BlackWomenRise #Coaching #UseYourVoice

Reading about your leap into sharing your story through 'When Black Women Rise' is like catching a glimpse of bravery in its purest form. It's amazing how you turned the challenge of reaching out individually into an opportunity to impact many more. Plus, hearing about the diverse people you've touched just shows how universal and needed your message is. You have inspired me to write a book as well (although it's not inspirational like yours).

Yes. Congratulations on your book anniversary. I expected it to feed many mouths. I am very happy to hear that it was digested, and the different ways its nutrients strengthened the receptive bodies.
