HERE’S HOW VINTNERS ARE RESPONDING Vine disease is rampant, labor costs are exploding, and the climate is getting hotter, sometimes wetter, certainly weirder. But most places you look, the vineyards appear exactly as they did decades ago: trellised, trimmed and utterly exposed to increasingly hostile elements. Despite brand new challenges, many are battling the same old ways—bringing shovels to a knife fight. Not everyone thinks this way. A growing number of vintners across the state are managing their lands with proactive philosophies born from extensive experience and backed up by tangible outcomes. During the #summer vacations, many of our employees relax with their families in the mountains, in the Mediterranean or on the terrace at home. However, not everyone can take time out at the same time - our bottling operations have no summer break. While the harvests in the southern hemisphere have already been brought in, the harvest in Europe is just around the corner. We have wines in our tanks that need to be bottled now so that they can be sold soon. At the same time, we are of course keeping an eye on the global wine market. 2023 was a year of lower yields worldwide - the last time so little wine was produced was more than 60 years ago. Extreme weather conditions led to significant harvest losses in many countries. We expect a slight improvement this year. However, the clearing of 10,000 hectares of vineyards in Chile has also affected the wine market. In addition, there has been a slight decline in consumption, particularly in China. The wine market is and remains highly competitive. There is therefore hardly any time for our employees to take a breather. The Winkler Index, a game-changer developed in the 1940s, categorizes grape-growing climates in California based on heat accumulation, guiding winegrowers in planting the perfect vines for optimal ripening. While this index has been successful within and beyond California, alternatives like the Huglin Index are considered for more tailored vineyard development. To adapt to rising temperatures, considering factors like soil and microclimate has become important, as well as engaging with the local growing community. Wine Business - Evolution of world vineyard surface area The world's vineyard surface area continued its decline, shrinking by 0.5% from 2022 to 7.2 million hectares. This trend, observed for the third consecutive year, was driven by the removal of vineyards in major vine-growing regions (including all types of grapes) across both hemispheres. Is there a more exciting sight when driving into a vineyard than seeing the vines heavy with all the clusters of grapes? Well, without sufficient concentration of zinc in the soil that would not be possible. Zinc is essential for normal leaf development, shoot elongation, pollen development, and the cluster of fully developed fruit. Zinc deficiency has been a known issue in the California Vineyards since the early 20th century, being particularly common in the San Joaquin Valley. Will 2024 be a good year for Italian wine production? T-minus 3x weeks until the 2024 grape harvest starts, and this week we’re reflecting on the impact of climate change on production. Last year a violent hailstorm hit the northeast of Italy, and in some cases, wineries lost 50% of their grapes just a few weeks before the 2023 harvest. Whilst we were lucky, we’re now seeing the impact of this storm one year later. While the quality of the grapes is so far very good this year (fingers crossed for the weather to hold for the next few weeks), yields are noticeably lower, which is almost certainly due to the damage incurred to the vines last year. The weather is unpredictable, with extreme events becoming much more frequent. Luckily, by using resistant vines and combining this with craft production methods (and some inventiveness), so far we have been able to minimise the impact the extremes of temperature and rainfall have. This year’s harvest saw a drop in volume due to ongoing drought, pest impacts (downy mildew, green mosquito), and even wild boars! Yet, the resilience of the vines shines through in exceptional grape quality, setting up 2024 to be an outstanding year for DO Penedès wines. 💧 Spring rains provided a temporary reprieve, helping the vines prepare for a challenging season.
