In the world of STEM, we don't give enough credit to our bodies. There are moments where I have to take a pause to process that. For example, most instances of a broken bone don't require anything artificial to heal. Our bodies do that itself, we just need to give the injured bone the right environment, "i.e, stress free", and time, and let nature do the rest. This interdisciplinary approach to healing is also true when we reflect on what medicine is and should be. Food is medicine is not just a cute tag line. It's become a mantra shared by many medical doctors who care about the communities they serve, especially communities of the global majority. I've felt at ease hearing my primary care doctor and my mother's cardiologist express a food forward approach to medicine. What we consume, how it's made, and where it comes from, are important questions if we want to maintain healthy lifestyles. But how do we ensure that ALL families are given the choice of food as medicine? 🍅 By thinking local, and growing seasonal fruits and vegetables near the community served. 💰 By creating a tiered-system of paying what one can afford. 🚗 By providing mobile markets near where the communities congregate like schools, libraries and community centers. 🧏🏾♀️ By listening to families on what produce fits their lifestyle and culture. 🍳 By sharing healthy recipes and hosting cooking classes with fruits from the harvest. An example of an organization that does that and more near where I live is Shalom Farms. I learned about them through my parents, who were introduced by their doctor. For my folks, who are on a fixed income but still want to live their best healthy life, it’s been a real godsend. It’s community-centered businesses like these that I’ll be watching out for in 2025. #Community #Education #STEM Ori Consultancy #foodISmedicine #farming #farmersMarket #foodJustice

The University of Georgia capitalizes on the expertise and knowledge of its faculty to make Georgia a better place to live by working in partnership with communities on issues that matter to those living there. One program, the Rural Engagement Workshop for Academic Faculty, which is facilitated by PSO and supported by the Provost’s Office, is helping increase that work through cross-university collaborations and experiential learning (EL) for students. One recent example from the Rural Engagement Workshop is research conducted by Christina Proctor, MPH, Ph.D., an associate professor in the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy, on the barriers female farmers in Georgia are facing over access to health care resources and helps identify solutions. Proctor participated in the workshop and her research was supported by a Rural Engagement Workshop seed grant. The study was presented in a research article written along with other colleagues including University of Georgia College of Public Health master's student Chase Reece, a past participant in another EL experience. Reese was also part of the PROPEL Rural Scholars program hosted by the UGA Carl Vinson Institute of Government. In my blog post last week, I introduced the concept of the three levels of responsibility. Obviously beekeepers are the immediate responsibles of #goodpractices and #beehealth. But you can't just leave them alone with that. There are two other levels: the community level and the political level. And those levels influence each other, they're not isolated. That's why I chose the donut to visualize this concept. So, at the 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 we have the beekeeper, who does the best he can. The 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 involves everything that's made in a group: associations, courses, trainings, mentorship, cooperation with scientists and vets... you name it. This level is very powerful: I've seen it do a much for good practices. Or enforce the feeling of helplessness and mistrust. Here, beekeepers have to open up to make it work (and everyone else involved, obviously). And it can give a big push to the 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹. This gives the framework for good practices, the common ground. For instance: Wanting safe food and pollination services means to regulate residue levels of pesticides and varroa treatments. It also means financing training programs (Australlia is a good example currently!) or applied research to find solutions. I explain this in more detail in my latest blog post: https://lnkd.in/eXiQwHZJ

Celebrating 12 Days of LISCmas: Inspiring Stories of Community Impact in 2024 In 2024, LISC Indianapolis wrapped up a three-year, $2.4M investment from Elevance Health Foundation to address systemic inequities in food access. From this catalytic funding, the Equitable Food Access Initiative was born, a community-led effort that has: ✅ Awarded $1.1M in grants to 9 local food organizations. ✅ Expanded urban farming spaces and job opportunities, including a paid farm apprenticeship program. ✅ Launched youth and adult education on sustainable food practices. ✅ Improved infrastructure and created home delivery services for fresh, nutritious food. Beyond funding, EFAI forged the Food Justice Collaboration—a coalition of 40+ individuals and 24 organizations working together to build a sustainable food system across Indy. This is more than an initiative—it’s a movement. A shining example of how community-led solutions can drive equitable access to food and build a legacy of resilience and collaboration. The Farm to Hospital initiative led by Dr. KimberLee Mudge at UPMC Memorial in York, PA, enriches the health system by promoting holistic wellness through fresh, locally grown produce. By integrating nutritious foods into patient and staff meals, the initiative supports overall health and nutrition. Additionally, the presence of greenhouses on the hospital campus enables year-round production of diverse crops, contributing to food security and sustainability efforts. The initiative fosters community engagement through farmers markets and educational programs, promoting healthy lifestyles beyond the hospital walls. Furthermore, partnerships with local organizations extend the benefits of fresh produce to underserved populations through community-supported agriculture programs and food bank donations. Overall, the Farm to Hospital initiative exemplifies a comprehensive approach to healthcare that prioritizes nutrition, community health, and environmental sustainability, ultimately adding significant value to the health system and the broader community. Synergy 3C wants to know your thoughts on the growing field of hospital-based farms. How could your organization promote the farm to hospital initiative to create VALUE in our care delivery system?
