## Your relationship with food is (probably) broken ## [DAY 2/3]
Yesterday I spoke about how humanity has created some amazing things with respect to food - we cook it in wonderful ways that make its taste far exceed the sum of its parts. We've developed the ability to store and plan for it. And we've created an enormous surplus such that most of our day is no longer spent finding it. But what's the downside?
# Fuel first, pleasure second
We've created a problem for ourselves. The thing that ought to be a source of energy, optimum nutrition, and good health, has become something that is just as capable of making us sick. It is likely to make us fat and unwell, and can easily rot our teeth. No other animal faces these issues.
A big part of the key to fixing our relationship with food is to think of it as **fuel first, and pleasure second**. Notice I didn't say 'fuel only' - pleasure in eating is important and joyful - but it is also important to ensure that, overall, nutritional content is given first priority when choosing what to eat and when.
# Portion control is out of control
Most animals live in harmony with nature and their environments such that they do not get fat - the food that they can hunt and/or find, and the energy expended to do so, is sufficient, and rarely more. Most animals do not need to think about how much they eat because they're simply not *able* to eat too much; mother nature has ensured that portion control is built right in.
Humans, however, are different; since we've created a food surplus, we have no mechanism for portion control beyond willpower. It is necessary, therefore, to create mechanisms and build them into our lives and our environments to ensure that there is some regulating force on the volume of food we consume.
