Where there are sharks, there is life, there is balance, health and abundance. It has already been scientifically proven that sharks are a keystone species in their ecosystems and a such a valuable presence, without whom the entire system is at grave risk of collapsing. It is evident anywhere I go diving to capture the presence of sharks, that where there are many there is also a thriving life around them, from the biggest to the smallest. Many still do not like nor appreciate sharks, but it's time we recognize that without them it is probable there won't be a us. The Resilient Queen of the Deep: A Tiger Shark's Unbelievable Survival Story In 2012, during an unforgettable underwater production at Tiger Beach in the Bahamas, I came face-to-face with the most battered and battle-worn tiger shark I’ve ever seen in over two decades of shark diving. She appeared suddenly on our underwater set, and the sight of her left us all in awe—a young tiger shark who had clearly survived against impossible odds. Her dorsal fin was shattered, jaggedly bent as if snapped in a fierce struggle. Her body bore deep scars, and what looked like multiple gunshot wounds told of harrowing encounters with humans. But the most striking detail was the hook and fishing leader embedded in her mouth, dragging along as a haunting reminder of her battles. Despite all this damage, she moved with a quiet strength. Incredibly, her wounds—though severe—seemed to be healing, as if the ocean itself was nursing her back to life. She was a living testament to resilience, a warrior of the sea who carried her scars like badges of survival. This moment, more than any other, reminded me of the raw power and unpredictability of the wild. Every dive is a chance to witness the extraordinary, and this encounter was one I’ll never forget.
