I have worked as a copywriter professionally for...a lot of years, and I have complete confidence in my writing in that environment. I know what I'm good at - that I AM good at it - and have no qualms saying so! Creative writing, on the other hand, I struggle with: imposter syndrome, self-doubt, I get in my own way and overthink every word - and I have spent YEARS struggling to overcome the anxiety of perfection. If the first draft isn't perfect, I'm a failure; if the words don't come out effortlessly I have to quit, because I'll never achieve that dream of finishing a book... This year I've made a conscious effort to read the acknowledgements you find at the back of every single book. I read 1/2 books a week, so I've got plenty of material to scour - and there's something REALLY IMPORTANT to recognise in those acknowledgements... Every single book that's in the world is the product of MANY people. Not just one writer, not just one draft, not just one story...every book that makes it to readers has been shaped by multiple people. Teams of people. Each story came from a village - and each player is vital. And then I studied the 'process' my favourite authors follow - and, just like my copywriting work, this process involves many people, multiple drafts, edits, study, revisions... So what I realise is that I need to get over myself. That - as I always tell my children - some is better than none, and done badly is still done. You can't get good at something without being bad at it first, and you absolutely can't produce a great book without first producing some of a book...
