I attended four math education conferences over the last four weeks and each one was AWASH in math edtech. Sometimes it isn't easy to tell the products apart. They're all just helping kids learn math using technology in slightly different ways, right? I figured it out though–the three dimensions of math edtech, three measures you can use to tell any math edtech product from any other. If you look at them on these measures, no two products are alike. 1️⃣ Mathematical Creativity - the number of different ways students can express mathematical thought. 2️⃣ Data Resolution - the different views of student thinking offered by the product. 3️⃣ Enriched Feedback - the number of bits of information the product offers students on their thinking. Can Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) help tutor your middle-schooler in math? Yes. Here's a paper, by Zachary Levonian, showing a preference for the RAG-enabled middle-school math LLM over a baseline model.
