With the Internet We Swap Freedom and Privacy for Recognition - Ondi Timoner 16 August 2024, Interview with Zan Rowe, ABC Take 5 https://lnkd.in/gAjPETaD Independent film maker Ondi Timoner’s documentary “We Live in Public” records the outcome of a 1999 New York art project “Quiet: we live in public.” “Quiet” was an immersive installation in which 100 people lived for a month in a New York warehouse. Supplied with the accountments of comfortable living - gourmet meals, sleeping pods, recreation areas, kitchens etc, everything was provided, except privacy. Using the technology of the day - webcams, video cameras and TV monitors, every action including going to the toilet was recorded, broadcasted to other residents and webcast over the early internet. The project was developed by Josh Harris, an early internet millionaire, to explore the impact of media and technology on human identity. Initially the project was loved by the residents, but with the ongoing the lack of privacy and continual surveillance the project slowly descended into anarchy and crisis. On the 31 December 1999 the New York Police Department shut it down. Twenty five years later, “Quiet” is strangely prescient. The look-at-me culture of LinkedIn and other social media has created a straightjacketed society where humour, personal freedom, respect for others and privacy is ignored in exchange for the of the vague hope for recognition and gathering of followers. Getting off social media and building authentic and difficult human connections is the first step we can all take to recover the humanity we have lost. #socialmedia #weliveinpublic #humanconnection #linkedin #tictok #instagram
