When a music review fails to understand the music itself. 💡🤨 I've recently stumbled across a national newspaper's review of Tate McRae's sophomore album (titled 'Think Later' for all of those wondering). While the review aimed to provide constructive criticism — in all fairness, it did raise a few excellent points about the negative impact of TikTok — it was rooted in... misunderstanding of the new generation's sound. 'Think Later' isn't groundbreaking by any means, but does it need to be? I reckon it should be appreciated for what it is — a fun body of work that holds its own, especially in the highly competitive music landscape right now. The album's lead single 'Greedy' has scored the RCA Records-signee a Top 5 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, after all. One of the main things that the review fixated on was the lack of USP. Fair play. Well, it certainly could be a fair observation, but the success (here come the "industry plant" allegations) of McRae's latest record shows that there's a real hunger for the exact sound that she brings, whether it's unique and original or not. And, honestly, is it *that* bad to stick to a formula that works commercially? Short answer: No. In a time where it's hard to make a living from music as it is, it'd be stupid not to follow the structure that helps you appeal to as many listeners as possible. If you're brave enough and genuinely want to not conform to that, go ahead. If you want to create music that fits the mould and have fun while you're at it, it's just as great and important. And I'll forever stand on this hill. Herein lies another issue. The newspaper attributes McRae's success to TikTok virality. Is that actually the case, though? I get the reasoning for the comment (the whole concept of the so-called "TikTok sound" is a conversation for another day), but McRae has already proven that she isn't a TikTok artist — she had a few big hits in the past, e.g. 'you broke me first' which debuted in 2020 and has amassed over a billion streams ever since. So, she isn't a one-hit wonder now, is she? Well, she's certainly not a TikTok artist, either, for she made her mark before TikTok became the phenomenon that it is today. I'm certainly not a die-hard fan of McRae's. I like her new album, I know a couple of her previous songs, and... that's pretty much it. However, what I don't like is when those tasked with guiding us through the vast landscape of music exhibit a rather limited perspective on what is emerging on the horizon. I won't name the publication, nor the person who wrote it. But in an observation filled with sweet ol' irony, I'd like to highlight that the same publication published two separate reviews on 'Think Later', with one giving it 2/5 stars and the other — 4/5. Funny, no? Just some food for thought... With that in mind, I leave you with a song that I've had on repeat for days when it first came out. It's a good 'un. #musicopinion #tatemcrae

Watch Me Shoehorn The Most Interesting Phenomenon in Independent Music into a Discussion About My Accounting Firm Niching is all the rage within accounting firmrunning circles, and with good reason. The refrain is almost always that you're not niched *enough*. But what if there's another way to think about niching? Enter Australian psych-rock/jazz-fusion/prog-rock/thrash-metal sensation King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. You might think based on the name alone that something strange is afoot, and you'd be right. Let's start with some numbers: - 25 albums released in 10 years - Released 5 albums in one year....*twice* (2017 and 2023) - Released a trio of albums based on microtonal harmony (and made it work three times) - Didn't release an album for 55 weeks and instead playing 113 shows in that time period. - The wikipedia entry for KGLW states that the genres they've covered include: psychedelic rock, garage rock, acid rock, progressive rock, surf rock, krautrock, psychedelic pop, indie rock, neo-psychedelia, thrash metal, stoner metal, progressive metal, sludge, folk, jazz, Tropicália, synth-prog, and microtonal music. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, then, is the antithesis of niching at least as it's usually defined. There are no labels, no constraints, and they certainly don't have a website that only caters to serving physician practices based on the West Coast in beach communities. But to anyone into music, it's woefully apparent that KGLW is about the most niched interest that any music fan into moderately mainstream music can have. You're not going to hear many I-V-vi-IV chord progressions, and you have to be as at home listening to jazz as you are metal. And therein lies the niche: people interested in complex harmony and innovative soundscaping, folks who have it bad for always hearing something new and fresh to their ears. And it works for King Gizzard. They have their own music festival which sells out annually. They routinely play 3 and 4 night residences at some of the largest and most prestigious venues worldwide. Their merch store is constantly sold out of popular items, and they answer to no music label, executives, or higher music industry power. How does this relate to accounting? For Seamless, we've taken a similar approach to niching. Our niche is not based on industry; we're agnostic to industry. Instead, our niche is the nature of our clients and what they have in common. They're almost always family-owned, entrepreneur-operated business with thin or non-existent middle management staffing who face the same problems regardless of industry. We're able to take the same base playbook and tweak it across a multitude of industries, much the same way King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard takes the same approach to complex and innovative harmony and applies it across a variety of genres. I'll take a bow for this very tortured metaphor and wish you a very happy Thursday

In the latest issue of GP Racing magazine, which has just come out, I devoted my regular column to both the physics and the human perception of engine noise as I know many fans still regard the high frequency sound from the past generations of normally aspirated engines with fondness. Using words to describe sound is not easy so it is great to repost this to add an aural dimension to my words. Thoughts anyone?

Alliance musical chairs: Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd partner up Two of Europe’s largest container lines today announced they would start a new long-term operational collaboration Gemini Cooperation, effective 1 February 2025. This follows the decision last year of Maersk and MSC to end the 2M alliance partnership, while for Hapag-Lloyd this means splitting from THE Alliance (the three other Asia-based members being Ocean Network Express, Yang Ming and HMM). Some details given to me in a briefing: • Wouldn’t say how long the agreement was good for, other than “for the long run” • 290 vessels • 3.4 mteu (60% Maersk, 40% Hapag-Lloyd) • 26 mainline services covering 7 trades covered (East-West + Middle East) + 32 shuttle services in Europe (14), Middle East (4), Asia (13) and 1 in the Gulf of Mexico • Dedicated operational team accountable for delivering quality objectives I was told that talks started fairly soon after 2M divorce was announced and that they quickly found they were “like-minded” with complementary assets (both ships and terminals) and commitment to decarbonisation (Maersk aiming for net-zero by 2040 and Hapag-Lloyd by 2045). There is a contractual commitment to quality – aiming for 90% reliability, so penalties if either company’s ships are late “we want to design a network to crack the code of reliability.” Services will include fewer ports by design with concentration on controlled hubs. The news represents something of a contradiction to what Maersk told us last year about needing to be independent to enable its integrator strategy, but I was told the plan was always for a combination of independence + cooperation. Whether this means the game of alliance musical chairs is over is debatable. This leaves a large gap in THE Alliance offering, which will by far be the smallest group remaining (see chart in comments). This will undoubtedly come as a surprise to them as the agreement was extended for 10 years when HMM joined in April 2020. A.P. Moller - Maersk Hapag-Lloyd AG Drewry Shipping Consultants Ltd
