JP Morgan just released some alarming data about consumer spending and personal savings. They’re projecting that the majority of US household savings will be negative in 2024. Translation: Debt will be greater than cash. Implication: Discretionary spending will slow down. This means you don't have time to sleep or get lazy. It's freaking GO TIME. 2024-2025 has the potential to carry out a mass cleansing in the Amazon space. I want YOU to not only SURVIVE but THRIVE. It's time to batten down the hatches, innovate like a madman, get into the weeds, truly listen to your customers, build off-Amazon, and finally get your social media game dialed in. As some of you will be aware we have had a bit of a falling out with Amazon. https://lnkd.in/e6Rz7Vx4 Thanks to help from BBC Sheffield and Louise Haigh MP I have had some constructive conversations now with Amazon and hope our outstanding issues are solved, however, I don't want to be in this situation again in 6 months so I want to try and make a proper change, my conversation yesterday gave some surprises to the Amazon representative and he was keen to try and make these changes too. Our main issues are around the charge backs, fines and claims of short deliveries, all of which are unfounded, and the long winded process of reclaiming money you are owed. Even with the correct documentation and everything they ask for in their processes some cases meet brickwalls of copy and paste "we cannot find"/"no you did xyz" for 6 months. I have had some contact independently from companies about their issues, all of which are very similar, and I want to try and fix this across Amazon and not just for me. However, for this to work I really want to impress on them some numbers. I spoke yesterday to them and was assured of people's anonymity but I understand people don't like putting their heads above the parapet so please DM me or email and I will simply add you as a number. Being able to say x amount of small business is having this issue may just make them change (who knows!). If all I do is get them to change from copy and paste "helpdesk" answers to actually engaging with suppliers it would be a big step in making our lives easier.

I've been keeping track of Amazon #PrimeDay results over at Numerator, and the early results would indicate that October Prime Day has been moderately successful so far. 📈 According to Numerator, the average order size on Prime Big Deal Days is $54.99, down from July's Prime Day sale but up slightly from last October's Prime Early Access sale. Nearly half (49%) of households shopping Prime Big Deal Days have placed 2+ separate orders, bringing the average household spend to roughly $112.49. 📦 📦 📦 When I think of Prime Day Deals, I think of great deals on more costly items, but I am way off base except for the $400 I spent yesterday, as the leading average order size is under $20, and the items leading the way are Protein Shakes, Batteries, and Fire Sticks. The recent suspension of Amazon Fresh’s ‘Just Walk Out’ system reveals an important lesson about data: it is made by people. Amazon Fresh stores allow customers to purchase items without checking out - supposedly using built-in sensors to track what they’re buying. In reality, as we now know, purchases are manually monitored by hundreds of Amazon employees. This hidden humanity has parallels in other industries. Football clubs use increasingly complicated statistics to assess performance, such as blocks made and touches in the opposition box. But all the data comes from analysts watching games in real time. They note every event that takes place - capturing over 2000 per game - and spend hours re-watching games to ensure quality control. Even employment figures require a human touch. The government only knows how many people are working because of the ONS Labour Force study, a monthly survey that asks thousands of individuals about their employment status. All this presents a challenge. Wherever there are humans, there are risks of error. And although numbers give the illusion of certainty, they are only as reliable as the people creating them. Returning to employment figures, declining survey response rates means there are now serious questions about data accuracy. In October last year, several dodgy data points actually forced the ONS to delay the publication of its monthly figures. And we now face a remarkable situation where Andrew Bailey, governor of the Bank of England, says he wishes he “knew more exactly what our unemployment number was in the UK.” If official employment data is susceptible to these sampling issues, then so is data about consumer behaviour. To pick one example, brands often draw on data from their own customer lists and loyalty schemes, but both sources are incomplete because they exclude non-buyers. As a result, they paint an artificially positive picture about a brand’s perceptions, especially when the brand has a high market share. Examples like this should remind us to never accept a number at face value. Instead, we should consider the process of the people who created it.
