Thank you Gabrielle Gould for bringing this to light. Let's start by focusing on our existing conditions and quality as it pertains to historic preservation and new builds. First, the statement “cheaper is better” has been ingrained in our building patterns and it needs to stop. Design, architecture, planning, and engineering is an art. A key signature of the team or individual who created it. I say team because most times it takes a team to bring it to fruition. “Wait, isn’t the quick prefab supposed to be more efficient?” Not exactly. The old way was! This is why we still see ancient marvels that baffle current structural engineering understanding. Look at the Pyramids or Manchu Pichu! These amazing feets are still standing to this day. As the saying goes, “Rome wasn't built in a day.” It certainly was not. So how can we build more resilient buildings? Start by getting to know the history and partner with an archeologist. Building quality is worth every dollar, it creates a vibrant community for all income types.

"62% of UK waste comes from construction - mindlessly tearing down and replacing good solid buildings like Smallbrook." #DontWasteBuildings It's a shocking statistic from the take-make-waste approach of most of the property development industry. And that's before we understand the huge damage to the climate, currently tottering on the edge of an unstoppable slide into oblivion, that's endangering our lives today. Most policy makers in the UK are lagging horribly behind the curve when it comes to the climate damage caused by new build development. Some, like The Labour Party led Westminster City Council are leading the way. "Our new retrofit-first policy will prioritise the retrofit and refurbishment of existing buildings to meet future needs over unnecessary demolition and redevelopment, reducing the impact of development on climate change." Birmingham City Council can make a political choice to get on to the right side of history. Fighting in court to promote climate destruction by an offshore owned entity isn't a good look today, never mind tomorrow.

Oh dang, Edwin Slipek telling it like it is re: some of the issues holding #downtown City of Richmond, Virginia back. Y'all, it's not about the next big, shiny project. It is about #corridors, filling #vacantbuildings, and addressing the #blight and #disinvestment that currently overwhelms the area. Kudos to the intrepid #smallbusinessowners who are investing, the #developers who are #developing #residential and #commercial spaces, and to the #downtownresidents who add to the #vibrancy of the area.

The Hallock & McMillan Building on SW Naito Pkwy in Portland Oregon is 2 years older than the State of Oregon, also took just one year to build...5000 Square Feet Brick and Iron Facade...This is how it looked in 1857 https://lnkd.in/g_EcfUYi It took many decades to restore a building that took only one year to start and complete... Sure they could have made all the bricks ahead of time...But we can make the same amount of bricks in a few days using. Back in the day... 18-1900, we were able to construct Gems of Architectural Masterpieces and it is the least talked about era of American History...Strange...What have American History Teachers been doing all these years...?... Wars are greater classroom topics than discovering Lost Means of Construction!?
