Combining science with people power 💪📈 Our global food systems are not working for the many people: hundreds of millions of people around the world go hungry every day, while the food system accounts for up to a third of all greenhouse gas emissions each year. Food systems are complex and require leaders with the skills and vision to transform these systems, so they respect the limits of our planet and ensure the wellbeing of people now and in the future. ➡ What we do The African Food Fellowship, supported by Wageningen University & Research and IKEA Foundation, is building a continent-wide leadership programme to support the next generation of food systems leaders. We believe it’s vital to nurture emerging local leaders who can transform the way we produce our food, so it benefits both people and the planet. ➡ How we create positive change Our partnership has already brought forward 350 graduates in Kenya and Rwanda, and the Food Fellowship is steadily growing. Creating strong networks of skilled and visionary leaders is key to transforming the food system in Africa. Wageningen University also has a cutting-edge research lab, which I visited earlier this year. These photos show the university’s crop research facilities, which left me inspired and optimistic that we can use agricultural land more sustainably in future. 📢📢 Call to action Let’s listen to and include the people closest to the problem in developing the solution. The system transformation must be just, equitable, empowering for local communities and we need to develop solutions #Together. Find out more about this partnership on our website (link in comments). #PeopleAndPlanet #Sustainability #Leadership #FoodSystem

By cultivating professional agribusinesses, Nuru builds resilience and pathways to prosperity in marginalized farming communities. Nuru Sr. Impact & Markets Associate Bethany Ibrahim recently attended IFC Agribusiness’ Smallholder Supply Chain Workshop. The event brought together IFC - International Finance Corporation, Agribusiness Leadership Program (ALP) experts, and AMEA (Agribusiness Market Ecosystem Alliance) partners like Nuru, giving them a platform to discuss the ALP and identify opportunities for collaboration. The ALP aims to help agribusinesses improve their business skills and build stronger, more sustainable supply chains. The program is crucial to Nuru as local organizations customize ALP content for their Cooperative Development curriculum. They adapt the learning material to the local context and dialects to train agribusiness cooperative members. “Sharing our positive experiences with ALP and, where feasible, blended learning approaches led by our locally-driven teams allowed us to offer insights for enhancing value in the AMEA network and promoting ongoing learning,” Bethany shared. #Agribusiness #SustainableAgriculture #SmallholderFarmers #LocalLeadership

What are you doing on the evening of Thursday, 31st October? My alma mater, Stellenbosch Business School, is hosting an important in-person conversation on transforming agriculture in Africa. This conversation is timely as Africa grapples with rising food import costs driven by climate change impacts, population growth, and urbanisation. This begs the question: will you always have food on your table? How can Africa leverage its resources and innovation to overcome the challenges facing a sector that accounts for over 60% of GDP and employs two out of three Africans? Can Africa be more food secure? Register to join African industry leaders Wambui Chege, Dr. Olufunso Somorin, Mary Abukutsa O. O.(Ph.D, MKNAS,EBS), Leah Mwaura in the conversation. We hereby offer you one of only ten delegate positions available for Nigeria' Welcome to the The Centre for African Leaders in Agriculture (CALA) Advanced Leadership Programme, an AGRA led initiative. We are excited to welcome you to the programme! These were the first lines of the email that ushered us into CALA in July 2022. Team Sage (5 of 10 Nigerian delegates) – that's us! – embarked on a truly transformative journey with the The Centre for African Leaders in Agriculture (CALA) through their Advanced Leadership Programme. This was not your typical classroom setting; CALA offered a dynamic, collaborative experience tailored for leaders like us actively implementing agricultural initiatives across the continent. The program was a vibrant mix of virtual and in-person learning events. We honed our leadership skills through practical exercises and discussions, but the real power came with the Action Learning Projects. These projects were not just theoretical, they tackled real-world challenges we faced in our own countries. With CALA's guidance, we received in-country coaching and participated in regular peer accountability sessions. It was a constant push and pull, refining our approaches and driving impactful results – all while building a solid network of inspiring cohorts across Africa. Sharing best practices and forging lifelong friendships with these fellow changemakers became invaluable resources as we navigated the complexities of African agriculture. Beyond the skills and connections, CALA provided unparalleled recognition. Graduates like us are positioned as delivery champions, granting access to prestigious AGRA platforms and events. This recognition has opened doors and also amplified our voices, empowering us to advocate for impactful agricultural policies. Our ALP project focused on the levels of export rejects we experienced in the Sesame seed sector. During the program, we developed the framework and tested the pilot successfully; now, we are poised to share this information with other relevant stakeholders because the issues of export rejection require a collaborative effort. The CALA Advanced Leadership Programme is an investment that continues to pay dividends. It is a springboard for leaders passionate about making a tangible difference in Africa's food systems. The Cohort 4 is now open for application
