6 reasons that your gut stops your weight loss effort
When people think of the symptoms caused by the gut, all the 💩 problems usually come to mind.
People rarely consider the connection between weight gain and poor gut health.
But, studies show that the makeup of your gut microbiome can have a HUGE impact on your weight.
Here’s how:
1️⃣ Calories - Gut bacteria play a role in how many calories we extract from our food. Bacteria in the Firmicutes phylum are more efficient in extracting energy (calories) from the food we eat. If your Firmicutes are elevated, forget about losing weight.
2️⃣ Fat- Certain bacteria can affect the host (that’s you!) fat storage. This can lead to a significant increase in total body fat, even when calories are DECREASED.
3️⃣ Metabolism - Some data show that an imbalanced gut can lead to a fatter host with a slower metabolic rate. This means fewer calories burned all day, every day.
4️⃣ Hunger - Your gut microbiome may also impact the production of hunger hormones like ghrelin. Several bacterial components have been shown to stimulate intestinal hunger pathways.
5️⃣ Inflammation - Can screw up hormones, blood sugar response, and make you retain water, all leading to a cycle of gut imbalance and weight gain.
6️⃣ Akkermansia - Is SO impactful in the body when it’s not present. Akkermansia helps control sugar and fat metabolism, both of which are a problem in overweight/obesity. Typically, leaner people have abundant Akkermansia, and when it’s absent, it’s impossible to lose weight, despite exercise and a perfect diet.
