If you live in bear country, this is good advice
Birdseed is *not* a part of a balanced bear diet, so don’t let flightless and fuzzy friends take advantage of lingering feed. If bears are fed human-supplied food, they can become repeat visitors and lose their fear of humans, cause property damage, and harm people, pets, and livestock. Here’s what OUT for a safer spring: ❌Bird feeders: Bring em’ in, folks! Do not entice hungry bears to your neighborhood with easy eats. ❌Unsecured trash: Keep garbage cans indoors and use bear-resistant garbage cans ❌ Surprise bears: Communicate with your neighbors and let them know that a bird feeder-free spring makes everybody safer For a harmonious season, here’s what’s IN: ✔️ Native plants and flowers are alternatives to traditional bird feeders and provide food and habitat for other pollinators too. ✔️ Bring in outdoor pet food and keep outdoor furniture and cooking areas clean. ✔️Respectful Viewing: If you happen to see a bear, keep a safe distance away (at least 300 feet away). Keep dogs on a leash, as off-leash dogs may encounter and bring a bear with them.

Hand washing to the fore of revised farm visit code of practice. “…preventing or controlling ill health at visitor attractions.” Every year in the UK many people, including groups of younger children, visit areas where they are allowed to watch and interact with animals. Indeed, so popular is this, that “millions of people” enjoy the benefits of farm visits and petting zoos, according to the Access To Farms website. One of the most important considerations in the guidance concerns hand washing, such as the kind of facilities that must be made available – and where they should be situated. The information is clear – hand gels and bowls of static water are simply not acceptable. “While the primary control measures should focus on reducing and eliminating faecal contamination, the most effective method of removing dirt and contamination remains hand washing with soap and running hot and cold, or warm water followed by hand drying.” #handwashing #farmvisits https://lnkd.in/ew6WyURe

Declared weeds are notorious for their rapid germination, growth and vigorous seed set, and this year’s seasonal conditions has led to a large germination of summer weed species. Summer weeds such as Caltrop, Bathurst burr, Silverleaf nightshade, must be managed as they can have ongoing adverse impacts on primary production and the environment. Some considerations for landholders for managing weeds include: 🌱 familiarise yourself which the weed species in your area 🌱 Learn to identify weeds correctly: https://bit.ly/42qDrcA 🌱 Check known weed sites early and manage any new emergence 🌱 Monitor paddocks to detect new incursions as they emerge 🌱 Be vigilant when moving vehicles and stock between paddocks and properties and take precautions as some types of grass seeds, fruits and burrs easily attach to vehicles, people and animals. If you are concerned about a weed on your property or would like help designing a weed control plan contact your local Landscape Board as they have officers available to help across South Australia: https://bit.ly/42qYewB

Happy World Whale Day! Believe it or not. Choosing to eat mass “produced” commercial fish (and other sealife) from restaurants and grocery stores is killing whales. Equipment (ropes and nets) used to catch lobsters and fish often entangle critically endangered whales. This also goes for turtles, dolphins, along with destroying the precious underwater ecosystem as a whole. We know actions have consequences, but we also know when those consequences are “hidden” underwater — it’s easier to ignore or forget. This is why World Whale Day is not only a time to celebrate the beauty and power of the world’s largest animal, but also a time to remind every one of harmful actions. This isn’t about “stealing their food”. It’s a much larger/more systemic concern than that. Eating fish is nowhere near as innocent as it’s made out to be. Want to save whales, other beautiful sealife, and ocean habitats? Stop choosing to fund industries that are killing all of them. Seafood for humans is comprised of algae and other sea based foods. Sealife such as fish, lobster, etc. is seafood for other sealife — not for humans. #worldwhaleday #savetheoceans #savethewhales
