The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) and the University of Birmingham have launched a robotics and autonomous systems (RAS) cluster. This collaborative effort aims to boost automation in the UK, elevate productivity, and provide high-skilled employment in the region. 🌍 Inspired by successful models, like Denmark's Odense, this cluster will bring together suppliers, integrators, users, universities, and local authorities. By connecting these parties, the West Midlands could become a powerhouse in robotics, potentially mirroring Denmark's success. Consider this: if UK automation matched that of the world's leaders, our productivity could rise by 22.3%, adding an estimated £184bn to our economy over the next 10 years. 📈 This initiative doesn't require massive funds—just a focused champion and community support. With a yearly investment of £100,000, and backing from the West Midlands Combined Authority, the possibilities are boundless. According to Professor Mike Wilson from the MTC, this is only the start. Shabira Abbas, PhD, Senior Scientist, Skin Health, Global Research PC, shares: “In the Smart Hygiene pilot, we will explore various aspects of creating sensors and electronics that capture microclimate parameters affecting the skin of our incontinent product users. This pilot study aims to develop a reusable sensor integrated into incontinence products, measuring temperature, humidity, and enzymes to prevent incontinence-related skin issues and enhance healthcare quality.” Tilak Lakshmana, PhD, IT Business Partner, Sensors and Embedded Systems Lead, adds: “The sensor data, aided by AI algorithms, provides insights to the user or carer about skin health directly to a smartphone.
