THE Philippines is expected to be among the “key growth outperformers” in Asia-Pacific this year, primarily due to rising exports, a bump in state-led infrastructure spending, and robust growth in tourist arrivals, according to Moody’s Analytics. “Indonesia, the Philippines, and India are key growth outperformers. Philippine ports handled 2.5% more cargoes in the first quarter of 2024 as both domestic and foreign shipments recorded increases, preliminary data from the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) showed. Domestic cargoes, which accounted for 43% of the total, increased 4.9% to 25.552 million mt in the first quarter of the year from 24.367 million mt in the same period in 2023. All economies of 17 regions continued to record positive growth in 2023. Central Visayas posted the fastest growth at 7.3 percent in 2023. Western Visayas ranked second at 7.2 percent, followed by Ilocos Region at 7.1 percent. These three regions exhibited higher growths than the national level growth rate. Other five (5) regions with growths faster than the national level were: Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), 6.9 percent; Davao Region, 6.7 percent; Eastern Visayas, 6.4 percent; Cagayan Valley, 6.2 percent; and Central Luzon, 6.1 percent. Philippine Airlines (PAL) handled 24% more cargo in 2023 than in 2022 as it saw both its domestic and international market shares increase. PAL’s domestic cargo market share increased to 46% in 2023 from 44% in 2022 based on data from the Civil Aeronautics Board, while its international outbound market share grew to 13% from 10% according to International Air Transport Authority’s Cargo Market Focus Report. Fitch Ratings has affirmed the Philippines’ investment grade rating at BBB, a notch above the minimum grade, and maintained its stable outlook, citing the economy’s strong medium-term growth prospects. In a rating action commentary dated June 7, the debt watcher said the Philippines’ gross domestic product (GDP) may expand by 5.8 percent this year from 5.5 percent in 2023 and 7.6 percent in 2022. “We forecast real GDP growth of above six percent over the medium-term, considerably stronger than the BBB median of three percent, supported by large investments in infrastructure and reforms to foster trade and investment, including public-private partnerships (PPPs),” it said.
