In lubricants, the oil used in cars is similar to the oil used in trucks, but the similarity ends there. The passenger car engine oil is sold to fragmented customers with no negotiation power through numerous and often powerful channels, using extensive advertising. Products are packaged in small containers resulting in high logistic costs, necessitating local production. The lubes for trucks and stationary engines on the other hand are sold to bulk buyers using different supply chains. Industry structure (buyer power, barriers to entry) is substantially different. Industry profitability will therefore differ in these two cases, and the lubricant company will need different strategies for competing in each area.

What is the one thing a customer wants to hear that is going to get done in a service at a dealership? An OIL and FILTER change! That is the item the customer wants to ensure gets done, an OIL and FILTER Change. So when listing all the items in the service the customer stops listening when we say oil change. The next thing they hear is the price. We say oil change, list all the items that are also done in the service and then the price. What they hear is an Oil Change is $868...and we wonder why folks think the dealership is expensive? Try this next time you explain what is included in a recommended service at your dealership. List all the items first then the oil and filter change at the very end. Your customer will listen to all they items you do in the service until you get to oil change.
