Thank you Tom Browne, Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at MassBio and Chris Reddick, VP of US Health Equity CSR and Philanthropy at Takeda for hosting yesterday’s Health Equity RoundTable and to all the attendees for a great conversation! Our Health Equity Advisor, Rosa M. Colon-Kolacko, PhD. MBA, CDM, SHRM-SCP of Global Equity Learning, and Luminous Engagement Lead, Aneth Canale, PhD MBA discussed practical actions the industry can take to address health disparities. We all agreed that the life sciences industry has a particular role and responsibility. It starts with ensuring representation in clinical development through trials, and includes addressing power imbalances in commercialization strategies, and providing in-market support to patients in all communities. We believe this requires us to: 🫶 Put biology into human context Only 20% of healthcare outcomes are attributable to clinical care. The other 80% are social, cultural, and environmental factors. We must bring a whole person, real world approach to clinical development and commercialization. 🤝 Co-create with communities How the industry builds relationships with patients and communities is just as important as the clinical products & services developed. To improve trust, we must establish sustainable community partnerships, to jointly develop solutions facilitated with humility and cultural sensitivity. 🙌 De-silo industry activities Health equity practices must be embedded in industry processes and activities along the entire value chain, from clinical development through commercialization, taking into account systemic issues, power imbalances, data collection and integrity. We have created a comprehensive industry self-assessment tool and health equity practice to help organizations measure their progress across all stages of development. This is an insightful discussion via MedCity News. Two industry leaders discuss the crucial need for healthcare organizations to genuinely commit to breaking down systemic barriers. American Medical Association President Jesse Ehrenfeld emphasizes the need to address foundational problems in technology design and development, eliminating bias and incorporating better datasets to prevent perpetuating existing biases. Amaka Eneanya, Chief Transformation Officer at Emory Healthcare, underscores the importance of intentionality in health equity initiatives, urging nuanced approaches and the inclusion of diverse leaders based on their expertise rather than just their demographic representation. Key takeaways 👉 Acknowledge historical practices for true equity. 👉 Prioritize resource allocation for social justice solutions. 👉 Address foundational issues in technology for unbiased outcomes. 👉 Diversity in digital health investment for equitable progress. 👉 Intentionality in health equity initiatives is paramount. https://ow.ly/fBXO30syKKc
