Providing The Right Connections & Safe Passage For Startups On Their Fantastic Voyages

It's a big week coming up, and the race continues. Recent reflections have revealed quite a bit, and especially for those grinding away I thought to pen a few things down which may prove useful especially for those planning, as we are, to make the most use of Startup Week. 1.) Quality Connections Over Vast Collections The most successful people I've known in the startup community do not focus on accumulating vast sums of network connections --- they carefully cultivate a sphere of trust and this core circle is soon protected by several outer rings. Understanding who you need in your corner is even more important than finding someone who does a specific task very well, as the latter is so much easier to do when you have a good crew -- no matter how small. The time you spend on people should first be with your own, then with those who deserve it, and very little with the brain pickers and false friends. 2.) Mission Over Management Leaders who have communicated their vision clearly, fairly, and concisely get the results they need from people who are outstanding at what they do. Getting bogged down in other things and eventually going from leading to managing, especially without the proper process in place, is excruciating. I would not advise. The mission, if you understand it, should be rendered simply and meaningfully. Easy to say, challenging when you work hard on it at first. You'll go through even more versions than your deck and that's perfect. 3.) Value Time You've seen it everywhere, and that's because it's true. We do not have time to spare, none of us. We can't afford to waste it, not a grain, because that time once given cannot be refunded or replenished. When I consider this scarcity, I behave accordingly and I encourage our folks to do the same. Fail fast, learn often. Assess the realistic potential of each and every business relationship - some don't mean to waste time, others do, both situations demand caution. You are in this to accomplish what you set out to do -- you won't please everyone, and you will fight meaningful battles if you choose wisely. 4.) Find An Anchorage Prioritizing your anchorage means having a strong shelter to go to when the stormy winds blow. Make one in your mind, and as Thoreau or London might suggest, find real anchorages in the good people and places around you -- invest in them. Rest just about as often as you can knowing as we do that real rest comes seldom in our way of life. Spend this Sunday mindful of your inner-resources. Take care everyone.
