What can we do to better support the growing population of children diagnosed with autism? The prevalence of autism continues to rise. According to the CDC, 1 in 36 children in the U.S. is now diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This increase highlights the need for more accessible, tailored services and a greater understanding of how to best support these children and their families. Studies show that early intervention, particularly through therapies like Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), can significantly improve developmental outcomes. How can we make an impact? We can begin by advocating for early diagnosis and individualized therapy for children with autism. Creating inclusive environments, providing more resources in schools, and ensuring parents have access to trained professionals are all critical steps. Community awareness and professional training are essential to helping children with autism thrive in everyday settings. What can you do to help? Whether you're a parent, teacher, or community member, you can play a role in raising awareness and creating a more inclusive world for children with autism. Awareness is knowing somebody has autism, but acceptance is including that person and embracing them despite their differences. That is what this month is for, to understand what autism is, as well as how it can affect life for autistic people.   As an autistic adult, it is one of my life goals to ensure that neurodiversity is no longer a taboo topic, and that all individuals are advocated for in our society regardless of their health status. Autism is not a trend, it is not a disease, and it is is not something that should be ignored or discriminated against.   Let's use this month to educate ourselves and others about autism, break down stigmas, and advocate for inclusivity in all aspects of life. In today's world, we have access to a wealth of information on techniques and strategies for different types of autism, reflecting our increasing awareness. Yet, there's no one-size-fits-all approach to parenting neurodiverse adolescents. Where do we start? It begins with understanding our child or adolescent deeply – grounded in love and connection. Every child deserves belief and support, regardless of their needs or learning styles. Believing in ourselves as parents is crucial. From there, we can explore resources that align with our values and parenting style. Support is essential in navigating the challenges of raising a child with additional needs.
