At a time when mental health problems are skyrocketing, a new study in JAMA Pediatrics provides one of the most comprehensive state-by-state accountings to date of firearm suicides in children and youth. The findings are eye-opening — but could also help in crafting interventions. 👇

'Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) prevalence has increased to impact 1:36 people (2.78%) with high rates of co-occurring behavioral health challenges, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, or depression (77.7%; 1, 2). Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (EDS/HSD) are genetic disorders that affect connective tissue matrix proteins and often co-occur with ASD and ADHD (3). Connective tissue disorders affect collagen and elastin and contribute to many physical and behavioral health symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, gastrointestinal problems, sleep challenges, fatigue, vertigo, tinnitus, or pain (3). Understanding the overlapping symptoms of autism, ADHD, and co-occurring symptoms of EDS/HSD, how to evaluate, give conservative care, and utilize medications or supplements as appropriate may help increase the quality of life and achievement of life goals with pediatric patients and their families.' #pregnancy #maternalhealth #newborn #autism #neuroscience https://lnkd.in/g9Dw5-Za Key Messages Epidemiological studies suggest that #maternal #cardiovascular #disease (CVD) can alter #placental #function and lead to adverse obstetric and #neonatal #health outcomes. Most studies focused on short-term offspring health outcomes, and no study investigated whether the presence of maternal CVD before pregnancy increases later risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring. In the current study, pre-existing maternal CVD (including cerebrovascular disease, arrhythmia, heart failure, valvular and congenital heart diseases) was associated with increased risk of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (#ADHD) and #autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in offspring. Paternal CVD generally did not show elevated risk of ADHD, ASD or intellectual disability, warranting further research to identify the possible intrauterine mechanisms underlying the maternal-offspring associations.

A national emergency in child and adolescent mental health has been declared jointly by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP). This declaration emphasizes the critical need to address mental health challenges facing young people, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. https://lnkd.in/espPDACr Main points: 1. Urgency of Action: to support the mental health of children and adolescents, recognizing that mental health issues can have long-term consequences. 2. Focus on Prevention and Early Intervention: The declaration emphasizes the importance of preventive strategies and early intervention to promote healthy mental development and mitigate the risk of more serious mental health conditions. 3. Call to Action: Increased investments in mental health services for children and adolescents, improved access to care, and greater collaboration across sectors to address this urgent public health crisis. Overall, the declaration underscores the need for immediate and comprehensive action to prioritize and address the mental health needs of young people in our communities. 85% of psychotropic medications are prescribed by PCPs, yet up to 64% report discomfort with doing so, and training is often far too theoretical. To address this gap, Fort Health and Advocare, LLC Doctors are hosting a training series on pediatric psychotropic medication management. Led by Dr. Sara Harmon, the series aims to boost pediatricians’ confidence in managing common mental health concerns in primary care. In July, we'll be tackling the diagnosis of, and prescribing stimulants for, ADHD through two sessions: - July 11, 12:15 pm ET: open webinar where Dr. Harmon will present best practices using (de-identified) case discussions - July 18, 12:15 pm ET: invitation only case-consultation session where pediatricians can bring their own (de-identified) cases To register please visit: https://lnkd.in/e-bJMxCg For any questions or to learn more, please contact shai@forthealth.com or call 908 280 4363 The only way to solve this pediatric mental health crisis is by working together... #pediatrics #mentalhealth #psychiatry
