"How do you translate the specifications of your foreign customers?" I asked this question to a new direct client who has many customers in Germany. Their answer was: "I use Google Translate. I just need to understand what the customer wants, and since I know the subject and the technical terminology, I can spot translation errors very easily". "OK", I replied, "then what do you need me for?" "I need you for the most important parts, where I need to be 100% sure of the meaning. I will ask you to translate those parts for me".    This is an example of the correct use of machine translation. Google Translate, DeepL, ChatGPT, etc are powerful tools when you just need a general understanding of the meaning or for documents for internal use only. Last week marked a sad moment in my career. 😔 I completed what could be my final assignment for one of my most cherished clients. As I reflect on my 25-year journey (❕) in the translation field, I am compelled to share a depressing truth with you. From the outset, I specialised on causes close to my heart, such as human rights and education, aligning my expertise with NGOs and non-profits striving for positive change. Among them, one client stood out —a high-profile organisation on the global stage. For over a decade, I have translated lots of internal documentation, toolkits, funding applications, position papers, annual reports and much more for them. In the past 12 years, I have enjoyed witnessing the positive impact of our collaborative efforts, while I have stood shoulder to shoulder when times were bad. I have shared the best of news with my colleagues there —since I consider them “colleagues”, despite my being a freelancer—, and I have cried with them when one of us was having a rough time. ✨ Yet, what began as a partnership built on mutual respect and shared values gradually succumbed to automation. A few years ago, the organisation’s fantastic in-house translation department was asked to start using translation memories. Then, they had to implement a machine translation tool and hire freelancers to only do postediting for most projects. Now, the whole translation department is going to be dismissed, and each unit in this huge organisation will have to deal with their own translations in the best way they can – even if they have no knowledge of the languages involved or the translation process as a whole. Years of hard work done by this team (translation memories, document archiving, style guides, terminological databases…) will either be lost or allowed to become outdated. And several colleagues that have been working there for decades will be left without a job. 😢 👩💼 Colleagues (you know who you are): It was a real honour to work with you towards the organisation’s mission, but more than that, it’s been a privilege to collaborate closely, learn from your expertise and share in the journey together. While the organisation itself may continue its course and I might still get one or two translations from random people there, I feel like it’s the end of an era. Unpopular opinion: LLMs outperform humans in translation tasks 🤖. But that's not the whole story. Here is why: - LLMs shine for popular languages. - Struggle with less common ones. Ever tried translating English to Hungarian or Mongolian with an LLM? Good luck getting anything accurate. English to French? Much better odds. Research shows LLMs outperform dedicated machine translation engines. But that's just for the languages they've been fed a feast of data. When it comes to low-resource languages, they're practically on a data diet. Here's the twist: more automation could mean more work for human translators. Yes, you read that right. As machines take on the bulk, the demand for translation grows. Humans step in for the tough stuff. - Need industry-specific terms? Humans win. - Want a formal tone? Humans win. - Got a rare language pair? Humans, humans, humans. Bottom line: LLMs are tools, not replacements. - Use LLMs for common languages and drafts. - Hire humans for nuance, rare languages, and polish. - Blend both for the best of both worlds.
