It calls us to deepen our commitment to abolition, to resistance, to community, and to hope–hope that is radical, unshakable, and infinite. Remember that our resistance doesn't begin or end with any one administration. This is an ongoing, multi-generational struggle against the systems of power that marginalize, punish, and separate us. This is the moment to double down on organizing, on mutual aid, on love for each other, and on the belief that we can create a world where all families can thrive. Honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Day: A Call to Action Today, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a man whose vision of justice, equality, and love continues to inspire us. Dr. King taught us that change is possible when we come together. He challenged us to stand against injustice and fight for a better future for everyone. At RCF Connects, his dream fuels our mission to build healthy, thriving, and equitable communities. We know the road ahead is not easy. With challenges already rising under the New U.S. Administration, the fight for equity and justice becomes even more critical. Anticipated policies and decisions at the national level may threaten the very principles of fairness and opportunity that Dr. King dedicated his life to. Dr. King once said, “The time is always right to do what is right.” These words remind us that now is the time to act boldly, think creatively, and work together. RCF will remain steadfast in this commitment. We believe in the power of connection—of people coming together to address problems and build solutions that lift everyone. By partnering with community members, local governments, and organizations, we can create systems that are free from racism, bias, and discrimination. We are committed to building a world where everyone belongs, has access to opportunities, and can reach their full potential. Dr. King also reminded us that, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” That is why we cannot ignore the struggles our neighbors face. We must listen to their voices, amplify their needs, and center their solutions. Together, we can ensure that all communities have the resources and support they need to thrive. On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, let us honor his legacy with action. Let us challenge systems that uphold inequality. Let’s endeavor to replace them with systems built on equity and justice. Let us stand united in the face of adversity, proving that connection and collaboration are stronger than division and fear. Today holds profound significance as it marks both the inauguration of President Donald J. Trump and the observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This rare concurrence invites reflection on the enduring legacy of Dr. King and the democratic traditions of our nation. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a pivotal leader in the American civil rights movement, advocating for equality, justice, and nonviolent social change. His vision of a society free from racial segregation and discrimination continues to inspire generations. On this federal holiday, we honor his contributions and are reminded of the ongoing journey toward realizing his dream. Simultaneously, the inauguration of President Donald J. Trump as the 47th President of the United States underscores the resilience and continuity of our democratic institutions. Despite challenges, the peaceful transfer of power exemplifies the strength of our republic. Notably, this is the third time a presidential inauguration has coincided with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, adding a unique historical context to today’s events. As we witness this intersection of history, let us recommit ourselves to the principles of unity, equality, and service to others. Engaging in community service, as encouraged by Dr. King’s family, is a meaningful way to honor his legacy and contribute to the betterment of society. May this day serve as a reminder of the progress we’ve made and the work that still lies ahead in building a more just and equitable nation.

Today, MLK Day coincides with Inauguration Day, and the timing could not be more fitting. Now, more than ever, we are in dire need of true community. Not community built to: • Increase revenue. • Reduce churn. • Lower the number of support tickets. • Or identify the next product or service to sell. But real community—the kind Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. envisioned as “The Beloved Community.” A community that enriches our lives. A community that celebrates our joys and successes. A community that shares our burdens. A community where we can all rise together. Building The Beloved Community requires more than policy or business plans. It calls for a profound change in how we live and how we treat one another. It challenges us to reimagine our priorities—not just as individuals but as a collective. “Our goal is to create a beloved community, and this will require a qualitative change in our souls as well as a quantitative change in our lives.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Let’s work toward that vision—today and every day.

Today, NAZ offices are closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. As we reflect on Dr. King’s enduring legacy as a civil rights leader, we also honor his bold vision for economic justice and educational equity—values that resonate deeply with NAZ’s mission. Dr. King recognized that financial inequality was intricately tied to systemic racism and oppression. In his 1967 book, "Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?", he championed the idea of a guaranteed basic income, stating, “The solution to poverty is to abolish it directly by a now widely discussed measure: the guaranteed income.” His belief was clear: eradicating poverty required systemic change, ensuring everyone had the resources to live with dignity and thrive. At NAZ, we share this commitment to breaking the cycles of poverty and inequity. Our work centers on ensuring that North Minneapolis scholars and families are equipped with the education, resources, and opportunities they need to build generational wealth. Through our network of more than 30 nonprofit and school partners, we aim to empower scholars by dismantling systemic barriers and creating pathways to success. By investing in scholars’ academic achievement and addressing historical disparities in wealth creation, we honor and uphold Dr. King’s vision of a society where opportunity and prosperity are accessible to all. His legacy reminds us that education and economic mobility are powerful forces for change, and they remain central to NAZ’s work in transforming systems for the future of our children. Adams, P. (2024). The Use of Space and Place in the Civil Rights Discourse of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Abstract: This thesis, The Use of Space and Place in the Civil Rights Discourse of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., analyzes the academic literature on the social change agent. The study provides a deeper understanding of the relevance of the place/location, where Dr. King delivered his civil rights message nationally and internationally. Three historically significant sites and the events impacting the civil rights movement, in the cities of Washington, D.C. and Birmingham, Alabama, are examined. The three sites included in Chapter 2: The Jail Site, Chapter 3: The Bombing Site, and Chapter 4: The March Sites as examples. The main findings of the research showed the indelible imprint King’s discourse had on the civil rights movement. The interconnectedness between his writing, sermons, public address, and geography, particularly in the American South is noteworthy.
