88% of Danish women struggle to find clothes that fit... A recent article from Videnskab.dk titled "Does the clothing fit? Definitely not, if you have a large bust or are tall" reveals that standard clothing sizes only accommodate 12% of Danish women. Most clothing produced in Denmark is based on standard measurements for 'the average woman,' who supposedly has an hourglass figure, a small waist, a B-cup, and is about 168 cm tall. But this is far from the reality for the majority of Danish women. According to Mette Terkildsen, a lecturer and researcher in design and sustainability at VIA University College in Herning, these standard measurements are actually based on women in the USA, not Denmark. Her research, which involved measuring around 400 Danish women, found that 88% did not fit into these standard sizes. Brands should not define their audience by identity. When you tether your brand to a particular identity you are automatically excluding certain groups of people. If you sell tampons, you should also market to men because shouldn't they care about women? Or bathing suits as Dr. Anastasia Kārkliņa Gabriel points out. Moana Bikini is not for any particular body. It's a brand for anyone who values respect of all people and empowerment. Even if you don't wear their suits, you could buy them for someone you love to make them feel great about themselves. But more than inclusivity is at stake when you use identity to define your audience. It's bad for business. This love affair bordering on obsession that marketing has had with market segments and personas for over 100 years is WILD to me because why would you want to limit the market for your offering like that? This is not to say that you should market to all people. No, what I'm saying is you should build a brand based on a core belief—the reason you exist beyond making money—and market THAT. Your signal will attract the buyers for whom that belief resonates.

I no longer hide my annoyance when asked the same question over and over again. The question is: “Well, what do you think about that beer brand whose sales tanked last year?” What I think is that we need to be less narrow-minded in our thinking. The other day, an Australian swimwear brand got criticized for featuring a queer male model in one of their bikini products. Their response? Read below. “If Jake in our bikini upsets you that much we feel as though this may be a YOU problem.” When contacted for comment by the press, the spokesperson issued the following response: “Moana Bikini are - and have always been - one of the most inclusive and empowering brands in existence. This is not only in terms of our size and style range for women but - most importantly - in our love and acceptance of all races, ethnicities, body shapes and sizes, genders and sexual orientations. This hasn’t changed and never will change.” Being so obsessed with one company that failed leans a little too much into the realm of “confirmation bias,” when you ignore examples of how other brands decide to handle controversy—and what marketers can learn from THEM. Why is it more acceptable for men to repeat outfits than women? 🤷 Men's minimalism is often praised. Their repeated ensemble signals stability and confidence. While a woman's similar choice often sparks sartorial criticism by the generical public and the fashion police, pressuring them to show up in new looks at every outing.
