Let’s begin… 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐝 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐬: • IaaS: Provides basic infrastructure like computing, storage, and networking. Major providers: AWS, Azure, GCP. • SaaS: Offers fully managed applications. Examples: web-based email, CRM systems. • PaaS: Provides a platform for developing and running applications. FaaS (like AWS Lambda) is a type of PaaS. 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐬: • Public Cloud: Services shared among multiple customers. Providers: AWS, Azure, GCP. • Private Cloud: Dedicated to a single customer, managed internally or by a third party. • Community Cloud: Shared by organizations with common interests, like security. Example: HathiTrust digital library. • Hybrid Cloud: Combines public, private, and/or community clouds. Example: AWS Outposts. 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥: • IaaS: Provider manages hardware; customer handles OS, apps, data. • PaaS: Provider manages infrastructure and OS; customer manages apps and data. • SaaS: Provider manages most security; customer handles data and access controls. 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬: • NIST Cloud Reference Architecture: Defines cloud roles and structure. • Cloud Security Alliance (CSA): Offers best practices via the Cloud Controls Matrix (CCM). 𝐕𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 Cloud providers use virtualization to let multiple systems share the same hardware. The hypervisor is a special operating system that manages access to the hardware. Virtual machines (VMs) run on top of the hypervisor and use standard operating systems like Windows and Linux. VMs think they have direct access to hardware, but the hypervisor manages this access. 𝐇𝐲𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐬: • Type I Hypervisors (bare-metal): Run directly on hardware and support guest operating systems. Commonly used in data centers for efficiency. • Type II Hypervisors: Run on an existing operating system and request resources for guest operating systems. Cloud... It is the future, but is it ALWAYS Public? Many of my clients, though not all, the vast majority have dipped their toe into the proverbial "Cloud" and decided not to jump all in, rather have a hybrid, multi-cloud strategy. Each case is uniquely different, with requirements and justifications, and in particular, sufficient human capital or lack thereof being a similarly important driving factor in end strategy and deployment. That being said I have taken companies essentially full cloud and I have helped companies depart from Cloud to go back on-premise. Oracle has product sets that enable your strategy regardless. Furthermore, with Oracle HW offerings for on premise, you can enjoy full support and licensing privileges for a full stack of virtualization SW including, Kubernetes, OLVM, KVM, Docker, K-Splice, and more included at no additional cost!!
