Extreme wildfire events are increasing in frequency and severity, due to rapid global changes in climate, vegetation, land use and resource management. The cumulative economic cost of wildfires is incalculable, and health effects to humans and other species from wildfire smoke are persistent and widespread. Uncontrolled forest and rural fires have had significant impacts on the societies, economies and environment of the Latin America and the Caribbean region. The Centro de Conservación Biológica de Operaciones Forestales will provide wildfire science and management strategies to increase capacity in the LAC region and equip decision makers to prevent wildfires and reduce their impacts. I have a son and a daughter, both members of generation Z. When they were younger, my wife and I would give them an allowance. We made them split their allowance into three buckets: savings, spending and charity. Savings they got back when they turned 18, spending can be used as they desired and charity got donated to the nonprofit of their choice. My kids normally saved up their charity dollars all year and made an end-of-the-year gift. Their gifts, and our experience in making those gifts online, inspired me to write this blog article.
