Our CEO Steve Colón weighed in on yesterday’s announcement from the Department of Education that this year’s FAFSA will be released on December 1st. “If we have to make a trade off and we have to push back Oct. 1 to get a fully functioning system, that’s a trade we’re willing to make. What we really need is clarity and transparency around timing so we can make a plan.” For Bottom Line, and as a member of the National College Attainment Network (NCAN) students being able to access a reliable system is most important. Another university acting on the evidence that standardized testing is necessary; otherwise, academic standards will be lowered. Almost every other nation on the planet uses standardized testing; it is only controversial as "unjust" in the USA. The Chinese instituted standardized testing in 500 C.E. to be more fair. Yes, IQ and wealth often correlate (see work of Charles Murray); unequal outcomes do not imply unfairness. #highereducation #sat #act #testing #diversityequityandinclusion

Really interesting results here. I've often had conversations with folks about just this quandary - many assessment policies that increase student autonomy and decrease stakes (like exam retakes here, but also a lot of aspects of grading systems like specifications grading) benefit most the students with the most time and bandwidth. I've seen this frequently in my own classes - the students who take advantage of opportunities like retakes and extra credit and additional opportunities to demonstrate learning are those who least need them, and the students who would most benefit don't take advantage (likely due to a paucity of time and other resources). No easy solutions here, but glad to see we're thinking and talking about the issue.
From LSE Optional exam retakes reduce anxiety but may exacerbate score disparities between students with different social identities. Exam retakes improved student exam scores but differences in participation among students with different social identities led to slightly larger inequities in exam scores after retakes Brownell and co-authors show. https://lnkd.in/e5gf_F9v

The letter from the SRC president shows that the STAT - P test is not a program designed and owned by the two National Universities. This program sounds to be owned by a subsidiary opportunist company looking for ways to deprive students of extra means for one's gain. The Universities administration should provide counter explanations to this letter from the SRC. Stat -P management is increasing the fees using the undercover of the economic situation faced by the nation. This burdening elligible students on top of thousands of kina paid for their fee. The question all students should ask is what is the impact of the Stat - P test?

It's disheartening to witness the decay in the education sector. Recently, external examinations have not favored the diligent students; instead discouraging the culture of reading among those eager to learn. It's surprising to see an average student who slept through the period of the examination boasting of seven distinctions, while the hardworking ones who studied diligently receive none. Corruption pervades the education sector involving nearly all stakeholders. Recently, a Master's degree holder in Mathematics was interviewed and he claimed he couldn't teach Mathematics but he can teach Economics, how can someone spend six years studying a course without being able to teach it effectively? Some school owners bend rules and engage in examination malpractices to attract students. Parents often withdraw their children from school after SS2, rushing them through education, please where are we rushing them to? We will always pay for examination assistance when we did not let them gain the needed knowledge. This evening I reflected on the government's new 18-year admission requirement policy, which has led some students to think of altering their age to fit into the new system. I asked myself: Where is our education system heeding to? Where are the students getting external examinations questions? What is the way forward?

If you haven't noticed what is happening on college campuses in the western world, you should be concerned. Historically hubs of open inquiry, free speech, and evidence based research, they are becoming echo chambers of groupthink. Faculty are the main target for administrative sanctions, and not just from the political left.... Finally we have a decent breakdown: Source: Scholars under fire report: https://lnkd.in/geKnWn-M

In my opinion, this is true in the business world as well as education. Need-support leads to need-satisfaction. That can lead to better retention of employees to help reduce turnover. Autonomy supportive managers are the key to maintaining and retaining your workforce.
New SDT research spanning 70 countries & over half a million students reveals that when teachers support autonomy, competence, relatedness, student well-being improves across diverse cultural, economic & political contexts. 📚✨ https://ow.ly/Ut0F50SPIYq

Interesting Q - which countries are best to live in for being a faculty member at a university? Factoring in that many countries have university sectors in financial troubles lately.
